The first generation of metal bands was ceding the limelight. Deep Purple had broken up soon after Blackmore’s departure in 1975, and Led Zeppelin broke up following drummer John Bonham’s death in 1980. Black Sabbath plagued with infighting and substance abuse, while facing fierce competition with their opening band, the Los Angeles band Van Halen.[183][184] Eddie Van Halen established himself as one of the leading metal guitarists of the era. His solo on “Eruption”, from the band’s self-titled 1978 album, is considered a milestone.[185] Eddie Van Halen’s sound crossed over into pop music when his guitar solo was featured on the track “Beat It” by Michael Jackson (a U.S. number 1 in February 1983).[186]

One of the best. This is a great song that closes off a great album. It was one of the first classic rock songs I really liked and Roger Daltry’s scream will be forever etched in my mind as well as the drum solo, the synth solo and everything else that makes this song amazing to me. – jarjar36

My approach (which again, as you know) is all-80s, and I have always put the Modern Rock in a category by itself to give those songs prominence against all the other genres. Oddly, the off-balance creates better balance, because many of the Modern Rock titles are fondly remembered from MTV and club play when they were currents.

28 Foo Fighters Foo Fighters are an American rock band, formed in Seattle in 1994. When someone finds their true love in life, sometimes they don’t know what they are feeling. Released in 1970, this song proves that there is no price on love. That love is about much more than material things, and if it’s strong, you will always feel that butterfly feeling.

Yes is my all time favorite band-and I started listening to the Beatles in 1964, so I’ve heard most of the great groups. Yes is to me where progressive rock ended. There has not been anything better since Yes. Every time I play their music, it makes me so happy and joyous. If every one listened to them the world would be a much more happier and peaceful planet.

Is love something that just happens or is it something we should look for? Released in 1969, this uptempo love song takes you to another place. Plus, it offers more than just one of the greatest guitar riffs ever, but a story that many can relate to.

Although classic rock has mostly appealed to adult listeners, music associated with this format received more exposure with younger generations of listeners with the presence of the Internet and digital downloading.[3] Some classic rock stations also play a limited number of current releases which are stylistically consistent with the station’s sound, or by heritage acts that are still active and producing new music.[4]

The Doors should definitely be higher on this list. Morrison gets all the hype, but Ray Manzarek is one of the greatest musicians to play rock and roll to this date. Just listen to there last song ever recorded (Riders on the Storm) and tell me they should still be #12.

Jefferson who? It’s been decades since Jefferson Airplane/Starship front woman Grace Slick has recorded an album, and for good reason. The “White Rabbit” rocker has gone on record as saying she was in the biz well past her prime. “I left rock and roll professionally at about 49,” she told Vanity Fair in 2012. “That’s too long as far as I’m concerned.” Still, this rock goddess has been described as one of the best female vocalists of all time, so we’d love to hear just one more song. Slick is now a painter, so she’s knee deep in a whole other kind of hoopla.

Derdeyn notes many of these bands didn’t get a “fair shake” when they first hit the music scene back in the ’80s.  And certainly here in the States, there were many markets that did not have a true Modern Rock station back then.  Most of these songs didn’t cross over to Top 40, while most mainstream rockers (known in those days as AOR) didn’t touch them.  They were visible on MTV during that time, but less prominently played on FM radio.

Best.. Song.. Ever.. I’m a guitarist going to school for music, and I can say with a good amount of education behind it that Gilmour/Floyd has done something that few other guitarist/musicians can do, and this song is proof of that… To this day, he is the only musician to bring me to tears through his playing alone. Listen to the live version off of the pulse tour, best all around solo I’ve ever listened to.

44 ZZ Top ZZ Top is an American rock band that formed in 1969 in Houston, Texas. The band is composed of bassist and lead vocalist Dusty Hill, guitarist and lead vocalist Billy Gibbons, and drummer Frank Beard.

The “Royal Dukes Band” is the function band that is not a “Function Band”. With regular showcase performances and a free demo CD you can see and hear them live before booking them, and pick and choose the size and configuration of your dream band. These full-time professional young musicians focus squarely on getting your night up and jumping, but without the cheese. One of the great bands playing classic hits from the 1980s is the Power 80s Band, known for their unique costumes, superior sound, and lively personalities. For crowds that dig music from the 80s, this band is out-of-this-world good.

The lead role of the guitar in heavy metal often collides with the traditional “frontman” or bandleader role of the vocalist, creating a musical tension as the two “contend for dominance” in a spirit of “affectionate rivalry”.[8] Heavy metal “demands the subordination of the voice” to the overall sound of the band. Reflecting metal’s roots in the 1960s counterculture, an “explicit display of emotion” is required from the vocals as a sign of authenticity.[19] Critic Simon Frith claims that the metal singer’s “tone of voice” is more important than the lyrics.[20]

Diamondbag has been playing live around the DFW metroplex since 2001. The group began as a Neil Diamond tribute band, and has since evolved into the area’s ultimate ’80s tribute band. Diamondbag’s ’80s repertoire focuses on the new wave/alternative genre (Duran Duran, U2, Depeche Mode), but also touches on rock (Journey, Bruce Springsteen, Van Halen) pop (Madonna, George Michael, a-ha), and R&B/soul (Prince). From ABBA to Zappa, Diamondbag can play just about anything you might want to hear…. (more)
