I swear as God as my witness, next to The Rolling Stones, this is one of the most overrated bands in the history of music! I would have to be in the best mood(as in I just got laid by Kate Upton) to give Aerosmith credit for 3 good songs (Ragdoll, Angel,& Dream On) And I’ll always have a chip on my shoulder with Aerosmith for committing the ultimate rock sin by doing that crossover crap with Run-DMC! Because of that, bands like Limp Bizkit, Korn, & Linkin Park were born.

When we think of the classic rock genre, we think of the music persuasion from the late ’60s to the late ’80s and into the early ’90s. Although the genre is album oriented, classic rock has managed to produce some of the best songs the world has ever been introduced to, including some of the greatest love songs. A love song is magical, and the best ones contain epic story lines. When we hear a love song, we are reminded of what love actually is. What are your favorite classic rock love songs?

Although firmly focusing on key bands from the 1960s through early 1990s, it also includes articles and reviews of contemporary and upcoming artists it deems worthy of note. Despite starting as an on-off project it became one of the UK’s best selling music magazines.[2] In September 2010 it published its 150th issue and now has a higher circulation than the NME.

The thematic content of heavy metal has long been a target of criticism. According to Jon Pareles, “Heavy metal’s main subject matter is simple and virtually universal. With grunts, moans and subliterary lyrics, it celebrates … a party without limits … [T]he bulk of the music is stylized and formulaic.”[7] Music critics have often deemed metal lyrics juvenile and banal, and others[57] have objected to what they see as advocacy of misogyny and the occult. During the 1980s, the Parents Music Resource Center petitioned the U.S. Congress to regulate the popular music industry due to what the group asserted were objectionable lyrics, particularly those in heavy metal songs.[58] Andrew Cope states that claims that heavy metal lyrics are misogynistic are “clearly misguided” as these critics have “overlook[ed] the overwhelming evidence that suggests otherwise”.[59] Music critic Robert Christgau called metal “an expressive mode [that] it sometimes seems will be with us for as long as ordinary white boys fear girls, pity themselves, and are permitted to rage against a world they’ll never beat”.[60]

Thrash metal emerged in the early 1980s under the influence of hardcore punk and the new wave of British heavy metal,[202] particularly songs in the revved-up style known as speed metal. The movement began in the United States, with Bay Area thrash metal being the leading scene. The sound developed by thrash groups was faster and more aggressive than that of the original metal bands and their glam metal successors.[202] Low-register guitar riffs are typically overlaid with shredding leads. Lyrics often express nihilistic views or deal with social issues using visceral, gory language. Thrash has been described as a form of “urban blight music” and “a palefaced cousin of rap”.[203]

Excellent column Fred! I only wish that Modern Rock from the eighties could become the new Classic Rock, as in my opinion that was the best popular music the decade produced. But for all the reasons you enumerate, it will never happen, at least not in the US. In the UK and other parts of Europe most of those bands had a higher profile and many more hits, and the format could probably be sustained there. Among the only places that Modern Rock bands get any exposure in this country these days are in period films and TV shows. For example, “The Americans” is a great show by any measure, but a particular joy for any fans of Modern Rock. Check out Season 1, Episode 4 (about how the KGB reacted to the attempted assassination of President Reagan), which uses the song “Pictures On My Wall” by Echo & the Bunnymen, among others.

A pure classic in rock history, starts off in classic AC/DC fashion continues with timeless hard rock vocals, and that classic guitar riff that people who don’t even though what this song is knows, this is definitely a top ten pick for rock songs, without a doubt (although stairway is definitely better than this). Great contender for top three I feel, although all of these songs are great.

Written by Jimmy Page and Robert Plant, this is easily the greatest classic rock song of all time. The song opens with an acoustic-based folk intro and is highlighted by hard-edged rock music courtesy of Page’s intricate guitar work. Despite being never released as a single, it was the most requested song on the radio.

Just the best! The pioneers of Hard Rock.. With Robert Plant’s vocals and Jimme Page’s heavenly guitar.. With Bonham on drums and JP Jones on bass.. None of even todays greatest have a chance against them.. Led Zep forever!

Billboard magazine’s Kim Freeman posits that “while classic rock’s origin’s can be traced back earlier, 1986 is generally cited as the year of its birth”.[12] By 1986, the success of the format resulted in oldies accounting for 60–80% of the music played on album rock stations.[13] Although it began as a niche format spun off from AOR, by 2001 classic rock had surpassed album rock in market share nationally.[14]
