“Johnny B. Goode” is a song about a country boy who makes it big by playing rock and roll; of course, that boy was Chuck Berry himself, whose guitar work on this twangy tune comprises rock guitar 101. Just about every guitarist in the business has studied Berry’s riffs in this quintessential rock classic. Incidentally, “Johnny B. Goode” hit #8 on the Billboard Hot 100, and Rolling Stone magazine named it #7 on its list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. Not bad for a song that has been called “the first rock star origin story.”
Classic Hits tends to play only singles, while Classic Rock plays album tracks that weren’t on Top 40. That’s not an option for these 80’s bands. With most 80’s bands there are no useful depth tracks, and many of the bands were one-hit wonders.
Included in Pink Floyd’s rock opera, The Wall, “Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2)” spawned a single that became Pink Floyd’s only number one hit in the US, UK and other countries. Subtitled “Education,” it’s a protest song about the strict schooling in the UK, particularly as it relates to that in boarding schools. Part 2, written by bassist Roger Waters, as well as all the other “parts” of the song, contains a school choir, a searing and poignant guitar solo by David Gilmour and a disco drum beat, of all things. Members of Pink Floyd resisted making this a single, but we’ll all lucky they changed their minds.
Wonderful 1970’s rock, soul and country; Tom Johnstone’s wonderful vocals gave the Doobies their unique sound. They lost it a bit when Johnstone left in 1976 and was replaced as vocalist by Michael MacDonald, a great singer, but he just didn’t fit the sound.
How come they can’t mix these tunes into the classic rock formats that are getting soooooo stale. Seriously some of the songs are going on 50 years old! Its music of your life or the stardust format that our parents had when they were in their 30’s and 40’s. The Beatles, Who, Doors and Hendrix belong on an oldies format at this point. Why is radio so slow to keep up in an age where everything is going so fast to keep up with shrinking attention spans and competition from new media? I hear our Classic Rocker in Baltimore playing more 90’s, but its all the Seattle stuff or they will stray into U2 for alternative.
Singer-songwriter Pete Townshend perhaps became the unofficial spokesman of the 60s youth through his anthem “My Generation.” From their hard-driving blues-rock, The Who expanded their creativity and musical ambitions, climaxing in their 1969 album Tommy, a highly influential rock opera/concept album that became a huge masterpiece. They followed their streak with Who’s Next, another classic rock masterpiece. Their golden era ended following the death of drummer Keith Moon.
24 Tenacious D Tenacious D is an American comedy rock duo that was formed in Los Angeles, California in 1994. Composed of lead vocalist and guitarist Jack Black and lead guitarist and vocalist Kyle Gass, the band has released three albums – Tenacious D, The Pick of Destiny and Rize of the Fenix.
However, the genre’s direct lineage begins in the mid-1960s. American blues music was a major influence on the early British rockers of the era. Bands like The Rolling Stones and The Yardbirds developed blues rock by recording covers of classic blues songs, often speeding up the tempos. As they experimented with the music, the UK blues-based bands—and the U.S. acts they influenced in turn—developed what would become the hallmarks of heavy metal, in particular, the loud, distorted guitar sound. The Kinks played a major role in popularising this sound with their 1964 hit “You Really Got Me”.
Music scholar Jon Stratton traced classic rock’s origins to the emergence of a classic-rock canon. This canon arose in part from music journalism and superlative lists ranking certain albums and songs that are consequently reinforced to the collective and public memory. Robert Christgau said the classic-rock concept transmogrified rock music into a “myth of rock as art-that-stands-the-test-of-time”, and believed the canonizing of certain rock artists by critics, major media, and music establishment entities such as the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was inevitable. Media academic Roy Shuker said classic-rock radio programmers largely play “tried and proven” hit songs from the past based on their “high listener recognition and identification”; he identified white male rock acts from the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper era through the end of the 1970s as the focus of their playlists. As Catherine Strong observed, classic rock songs are generally performed by white male acts from either the United States or the United Kingdom, “have a four-four time, very rarely exceed the time limit of four minutes, were composed by the musicians themselves, are sung in English, played by a ‘classical’ rock formation (drums, bass, guitar, keyboard instruments) and were released on a major label after 1964.”
By 1980, the NWOBHM had broken into the mainstream, as albums by Iron Maiden and Saxon, as well as Motörhead, reached the British top 10. Though less commercially successful, other NWOBHM bands such as Venom and Diamond Head would have a significant influence on metal’s development. In 1981, Motörhead became the first of this new breed of metal bands to top the UK charts with No Sleep ’til Hammersmith.

Freddie Mercury- Iconic vocals, flamboyant stage persona, lively personality. Brian May- Underrated guitarist, beautiful voice, very wise. Roger Taylor- Amazing drummer, extraordinary falsettos, very humorous. John Deacon- Incredible bass lines, underrated songwriter, is the glue that holds everyone together. Do the math and combine it all together… what do you get- BAM! One of the greatest classic rock bands of all time. There music has and always will pass the test of time. To those who say Queen is overrated, please go kiss a goose. I would say Queen is a bit underrated, seeing people humming “We Are The Champions,” clapping along to “We Will Rock You,” heck, even trying to recreate iconic bass lines from “Another One Bites The Dust,” gives me joy. But that joy compresses into dust when they say they have no idea who Queen is. Queen covers nearly all genres. Funk, rockabilly, gospel, HECK, FREDDIE MERCURY SANG OPERA. Queen is the best and will stay that way.

Brief, abrupt, and detached rhythmic cells are joined into rhythmic phrases with a distinctive, often jerky texture. These phrases are used to create rhythmic accompaniment and melodic figures called riffs, which help to establish thematic hooks. Heavy metal songs also use longer rhythmic figures such as whole note- or dotted quarter note-length chords in slow-tempo power ballads. The tempos in early heavy metal music tended to be “slow, even ponderous”. By the late 1970s, however, metal bands were employing a wide variety of tempos. In the 2000s decade, metal tempos range from slow ballad tempos (quarter note = 60 beats per minute) to extremely fast blast beat tempos (quarter note = 350 beats per minute).
Whether Classic Rock earns summertime honors or not, it continues to defy format logic by maintain strong shares in all demos – 6+, 25-54, and amazingly, those 18-34s. Here’s the updated chart from Nielsen, tacking the format each June in metered markets:
Metal historian Ian Christe describes what the components of the term mean in “hippiespeak”: “heavy” is roughly synonymous with “potent” or “profound,” and “metal” designates a certain type of mood, grinding and weighted as with metal. The word “heavy” in this sense was a basic element of beatnik and later countercultural hippie slang, and references to “heavy music”—typically slower, more amplified variations of standard pop fare—were already common by the mid-1960s. Iron Butterfly’s debut album, released in early 1968, was titled Heavy. The first use of “heavy metal” in a song lyric is in reference to a motorcycle in the Steppenwolf song “Born to Be Wild”, also released that year: “I like smoke and lightning/Heavy metal thunder/Racin’ with the wind/And the feelin’ that I’m under.”

Coined by Black Sabbath drummer Bill Ward, “downer rock” was one of the earliest terms used to describe this style of music and was applied to acts such as Sabbath and Bloodrock. Classic Rock magazine described the downer rock culture revolving around the use of Quaaludes and the drinking of wine. Later the term would be replaced by “heavy metal”.

Just listen to Sharp dressed man, trust me it might even be the greatest Song ever put to paper, let alone the greatest rock song. Add to that Billy Gibbons was Jimi Hendrix’s favorite guitarist, his sound is utterly epic and his vocal range immense! Dusty Hill is a great bassist and Frank Beard’s drumwork is masterful. Add to that the sheer longevity and range of their music, they formed in 1969 and are still going! Every album is an evolution and a masterpiece! Enough said…
