How come they can’t mix these tunes into the classic rock formats that are getting soooooo stale. Seriously some of the songs are going on 50 years old! Its music of your life or the stardust format that our parents had when they were in their 30’s and 40’s. The Beatles, Who, Doors and Hendrix belong on an oldies format at this point. Why is radio so slow to keep up in an age where everything is going so fast to keep up with shrinking attention spans and competition from new media? I hear our Classic Rocker in Baltimore playing more 90’s, but its all the Seattle stuff or they will stray into U2 for alternative.

In January 1969, Led Zeppelin’s self-titled debut album was released and reached number 10 on the Billboard album chart. In July, Zeppelin and a power trio with a Cream-inspired, but cruder sound, Grand Funk Railroad, played the Atlanta Pop Festival. That same month, another Cream-rooted trio led by Leslie West released Mountain, an album filled with heavy blues rock guitar and roaring vocals. In August, the group—now itself dubbed Mountain—played an hour-long set at the Woodstock Festival, exposing the crowd of 300,000 people to the emerging sound of heavy metal.[148][149] Mountain’s proto-metal or early heavy metal hit song “Mississippi Queen” from the album Climbing! is especially credited with paving the way for heavy metal and was one of the first heavy guitar songs to receive regular play on radio.[148][150][151] In September 1969, the Beatles released the album Abbey Road containing the track “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)” which has been credited as an early example of or influence on heavy metal or doom metal.[152][153] In October 1969, British band High Tide debuted with the heavy, proto-metal album Sea Shanties.[154][139]

Because it has a meaning in the song. It’s lyrics are a story. And the guitar sounds are one of a kind, and are very easy to rock out to the beat and rhythmic sounds. It’s a classic example of rock music.

It’s impossible not to include the Rolling Stones in this list of classic rock artists. With over 50 years in the business and still going, the Rolling Stones are obviously a living testimony to rock music’s staying power.

The impetus for this song is that Paul McCartney wrote it for Julian, John Lennon’s son, after John had filed for divorce from Cynthia and struck up a romance with Yoko Ono. Paul felt sorry for kids in broken homes, ya know? Funny thing is, John thought the song was about him! Anyway, the single lasts seven minutes, long for the time, and who can forget the four-minute, orchestral coda? By the way, “Hey Jude” was the first single produced by Apple Records; it also stayed at number one on the US charts for nine weeks, topping all other Beatles’ singles; and in 2013 Billboard named it the tenth best song ever.

In the mid- and late 1990s came a new wave of U.S. metal groups inspired by the alternative metal bands and their mix of genres.[259] Dubbed “nu metal”, bands such as Slipknot, Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, Papa Roach, P.O.D., Korn and Disturbed incorporated elements ranging from death metal to hip hop, often including DJs and rap-style vocals. The mix demonstrated that “pancultural metal could pay off”.[260] Nu metal gained mainstream success through heavy MTV rotation and Ozzy Osbourne’s 1996 introduction of Ozzfest, which led the media to talk of a resurgence of heavy metal.[261] In 1999, Billboard noted that there were more than 500 specialty metal radio shows in the United States, nearly three times as many as ten years before.[262] While nu metal was widely popular, traditional metal fans did not fully embrace the style.[263] By early 2003, the movement’s popularity was on the wane, though several nu metal acts such as Korn or Limp Bizkit retained substantial followings.[264]

Billboard magazine’s Kim Freeman posits that “while classic rock’s origin’s can be traced back earlier, 1986 is generally cited as the year of its birth”.[12] By 1986, the success of the format resulted in oldies accounting for 60–80% of the music played on album rock stations.[13] Although it began as a niche format spun off from AOR, by 2001 classic rock had surpassed album rock in market share nationally.[14]

They were a very talented band. However, they had the potential to be SO much more. Seriously, they only had six studio albums, and one of them was a cover album. Instead of producing albums once or twice a year, they just partied their minds out, and ended up having only a few great songs.

The Doors should definitely be higher on this list. Morrison gets all the hype, but Ray Manzarek is one of the greatest musicians to play rock and roll to this date. Just listen to there last song ever recorded (Riders on the Storm) and tell me they should still be #12.

So what makes any rock music classic? Is it in the artist, the high amount of radio plays, the millions of records sold, or musical styles and subjects tackled in the lyrics? Actually, none of these things are required for music to be considered “classic rock.” “Classic rock” doesn’t mean the 70s rock records became automatically a classic by the time they were released. Nor an artist that releases these records doesn’t necessarily become a classic rock artist. A record’s huge sales don’t mean that record instantly becomes classic rock. The Beatles and Led Zeppelin have different musical styles and themes from each other, but both of them are nevertheless considered classic rock artists because they released classic rock albums.

In 1968, three of the genre’s most famous pioneers, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple were founded.[4] Though they came to attract wide audiences, they were often derided by critics. During the mid-1970s, Judas Priest helped spur the genre’s evolution by discarding much of its blues influence;[5][6] Motörhead introduced a punk rock sensibility and an increasing emphasis on speed. Beginning in the late 1970s, bands in the new wave of British heavy metal such as Iron Maiden and Saxon followed in a similar vein. Before the end of the decade, heavy metal fans became known as “metalheads” or “headbangers”.

Do I Ryan need to explain why this song needs to be ranked higher? One of the best songs to ever capture the feel of the Vietnam war era angst without ever saying that’s what it was. It applies to every tragedy. One of the best songs ever released. Lets vote it up there.

In addition to The Kinks’ Dave Davies, other guitarists such as The Who’s Pete Townshend and The Yardbirds’ Jeff Beck were experimenting with feedback.[113][114] Where the blues rock drumming style started out largely as simple shuffle beats on small kits, drummers began using a more muscular, complex, and amplified approach to match and be heard against the increasingly loud guitar.[115] Vocalists similarly modified their technique and increased their reliance on amplification, often becoming more stylized and dramatic. In terms of sheer volume, especially in live performance, The Who’s “bigger-louder-wall-of-Marshalls” approach was seminal.[116]

Closely related to power metal is progressive metal, which adopts the complex compositional approach of bands like Rush and King Crimson. This style emerged in the United States in the early and mid-1980s, with innovators such as Queensrÿche, Fates Warning, and Dream Theater. The mix of the progressive and power metal sounds is typified by New Jersey’s Symphony X, whose guitarist Michael Romeo is among the most recognized of latter-day shredders.[240]

Classic Rock is a British magazine dedicated to rock music, published by Future PLC, who are also responsible for its “sister” publications Metal Hammer and Prog magazine. Although firmly focusing on key bands from the 1960s through early 1990s, it also includes articles and reviews of contemporary and upcoming artists it deems worthy of note. Despite starting as an on-off project it became one of the UK’s best selling music magazines.[2] In September 2010 it published its 150th issue and now has a higher circulation than the NME.
