However, the genre’s direct lineage begins in the mid-1960s. American blues music was a major influence on the early British rockers of the era. Bands like The Rolling Stones and The Yardbirds developed blues rock by recording covers of classic blues songs, often speeding up the tempos. As they experimented with the music, the UK blues-based bands—and the U.S. acts they influenced in turn—developed what would become the hallmarks of heavy metal, in particular, the loud, distorted guitar sound. The Kinks played a major role in popularising this sound with their 1964 hit “You Really Got Me”.

Although classic rock has mostly appealed to adult listeners, music associated with this format received more exposure with younger generations of listeners with the presence of the Internet and digital downloading. Some classic rock stations also play a limited number of current releases which are stylistically consistent with the station’s sound, or by heritage acts that are still active and producing new music.

The origin of the term “heavy metal” in a musical context is uncertain. The phrase has been used for centuries in chemistry and metallurgy, where the periodic table organizes elements of both light and heavy metals (e.g., uranium). An early use of the term in modern popular culture was by countercultural writer William S. Burroughs. His 1962 novel The Soft Machine includes a character known as “Uranian Willy, the Heavy Metal Kid”. Burroughs’ next novel, Nova Express (1964), develops the theme, using heavy metal as a metaphor for addictive drugs: “With their diseases and orgasm drugs and their sexless parasite life forms—Heavy Metal People of Uranus wrapped in cool blue mist of vaporized bank notes—And The Insect People of Minraud with metal music”. Inspired by Burroughs’ novels, the term was used in the title of the 1967 album Featuring the Human Host and the Heavy Metal Kids by Hapshash and the Coloured Coat, which has been claimed to be its first use in the context of music. The phrase was later lifted by Sandy Pearlman, who used the term to describe The Byrds for their supposed “aluminium style of context and effect”, particularly on their album The Notorious Byrd Brothers (1968).
David Bowie is clearly enjoying his golden years with wife, Iman. The “Ziggy Stardust” singer had a ten-year gap between his last two albums, and while he hasn’t officially announced a retirement, he has made it clear he has no intention of touring. Still, 2013’s “The Next Day” was a sweet surprise for fans, without the usual “comeback” fanfare. Bowie secretly recorded new tracks with session musicians who sign non-disclosure agreements. Still, with no tour in the works and not even a picture of Bowie on his last album cover, the whole thing seems kind of final.
Singer-songwriter Pete Townshend perhaps became the unofficial spokesman of the 60s youth through his anthem “My Generation.” From their hard-driving blues-rock, The Who expanded their creativity and musical ambitions, climaxing in their 1969 album Tommy, a highly influential rock opera/concept album that became a huge masterpiece. They followed their streak with Who’s Next, another classic rock masterpiece. Their golden era ended following the death of drummer Keith Moon.
Artists like the Psychedelic Furs and Violent Femmes are part and parcel of the phenomenon Derdyn says could be on the verge of happening. And in his story set-up, Cross alludes to the fact that most Classic Rock stations have beefed up ’80s music on their playlists.
^ Though often identified now as “hard rock”, the band’s official debut album, Mountain Climbing (1970), placed 85th on the list of “Top 100 Metal Albums” compiled by Hit Parader in 1989. In November, Love Sculpture, with guitarist Dave Edmunds, put out Forms and Feelings, featuring a pounding, aggressive version of Khachaturian’s “Sabre Dance”. Grand Funk Railroad’s Survival (1971) placed 72nd (Walser , p. 174).

The metal scene has been characterized as a “subculture of alienation”, with its own code of authenticity. This code puts several demands on performers: they must appear both completely devoted to their music and loyal to the subculture that supports it; they must appear uninterested in mainstream appeal and radio hits; and they must never “sell out”. Deena Weinstein states that for the fans themselves, the code promotes “opposition to established authority, and separateness from the rest of society”.
Music scholar Jon Stratton traced classic rock’s origins to the emergence of a classic-rock canon. This canon arose in part from music journalism and superlative lists ranking certain albums and songs that are consequently reinforced to the collective and public memory. Robert Christgau said the classic-rock concept transmogrified rock music into a “myth of rock as art-that-stands-the-test-of-time”, and believed the canonizing of certain rock artists by critics, major media, and music establishment entities such as the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was inevitable. Media academic Roy Shuker said classic-rock radio programmers largely play “tried and proven” hit songs from the past based on their “high listener recognition and identification”; he identified white male rock acts from the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper era through the end of the 1970s as the focus of their playlists. As Catherine Strong observed, classic rock songs are generally performed by white male acts from either the United States or the United Kingdom, “have a four-four time, very rarely exceed the time limit of four minutes, were composed by the musicians themselves, are sung in English, played by a ‘classical’ rock formation (drums, bass, guitar, keyboard instruments) and were released on a major label after 1964.”
The following is a list of notable soft rock bands and artists and their most notable soft rock songs. This list should not include artists whose main style of music is anything other than soft rock, even if they have released one or more songs that fall under the “soft rock” genre. (Such songs can be added under Category:Soft rock songs.)

In 2010, Classic Rock partnered with Road Runner Record UK to publish the Classic Rock Presents: Slash. Believed to be the first magazine publisher to top an online album chart, the pioneering “Fan Pack” release gives fans in Europe Slash’s debut solo album, one month before it receives a standard release with a full 132 page magazine about Slash. The partnership marks the first-time a major album has been released exclusively with a magazine publisher, ahead of general release.
Boston I think in my opinion is a great classic rock band because Boston isn’t too hard rock but just enough classic rock and rock and roll to create the perfect combo. Plus their first and second album were definitely the best. After that it was ok, with the exception of Amanda, that was a great song!

One of the signatures of the genre is the guitar power chord. In technical terms, the power chord is relatively simple: it involves just one main interval, generally the perfect fifth, though an octave may be added as a doubling of the root. When power chords are played on the lower strings at high volumes and with distortion, additional low frequency sounds are created, which add to the “weight of the sound” and create an effect of “overwhelming power”. Although the perfect fifth interval is the most common basis for the power chord, power chords are also based on different intervals such as the minor third, major third, perfect fourth, diminished fifth, or minor sixth. Most power chords are also played with a consistent finger arrangement that can be slid easily up and down the fretboard.
21 Foreigner Foreigner is a British-American hard rock band, originally formed in New York City in 1976 by veteran English musician Mick Jones and fellow Briton and ex-King Crimson member Ian McDonald along with American vocalist Lou Gramm.
Sample of “Purgatory” by Iron Maiden, from the album Killers (1981). The early Iron Maiden sound was a mix of punk rock speed and heavy metal guitar work typical of the new wave of British heavy metal.
If you have been hurt by someone, would you ever go back to them? If they broke your heart, would you ever consider being with them? Released in 1975, this song is what real love is all about. Especially if you love someone so much, that even through the heartaches and heartbreaks, you still love them.

Excellent column Fred! I only wish that Modern Rock from the eighties could become the new Classic Rock, as in my opinion that was the best popular music the decade produced. for all the reasons you enumerate, it will never happen, at least not in the US. In the UK and other parts of Europe most of those bands had a higher profile and many more hits, and the format could probably be sustained there. Among the only places that Modern Rock bands get any exposure in this country these days are in period films and TV shows. For example, “The Americans” is a great show by any measure, but a particular joy for any fans of Modern Rock. Check out Season 1, Episode 4 (about how the KGB reacted to the attempted assassination of President Reagan), which uses the song “Pictures On My Wall” by Echo & the Bunnymen, among others.
In fact, Nielsen declared that Classic Rock is in serious contention to be this year’s “format of the summer.” Not bad for a collection of songs that was first heard on the radio 30, 40, and even 50 years ago.
