Don Henley of the Eagles wanted to write a song about life in Los Angeles, California, particularly its emphasis on fame, hedonism and money. Henley wrote, “It’s basically a song about the dark underbelly of the American dream and about excess in America, which is something we knew a lot about.” Henley wanted the song, decidedly somber, and played in harmonic minor, seem like an episode of the Twilight Zone, which it certainly does. Apparently the song worked on many levels, because it won the Grammy Award for Record of the Year in 1978. And the dueling guitars coda was rated the greatest guitar solo by Guitarist magazine in 1998.
The magazine focuses on established bands with credentials dating back to the 1960s. Indeed, many of the artists who have appeared on its cover are deceased (Jimi Hendrix and Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy featured on early covers, as did bands with deceased members such as Queen and The Who).
During the late 1980s, the power metal scene came together largely in reaction to the harshness of death and black metal. Though a relatively underground style in North America, it enjoys wide popularity in Europe, Japan, and South America. Power metal focuses on upbeat, epic melodies and themes that “appeal to the listener’s sense of valor and loveliness”. The prototype for the sound was established in the mid-to-late 1980s by Germany’s Helloween, which combined the power riffs, melodic approach, and high-pitched, “clean” singing style of bands like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden with thrash’s speed and energy, “crystalliz[ing] the sonic ingredients of what is now known as power metal”.

The impetus for this song is that Paul McCartney wrote it for Julian, John Lennon’s son, after John had filed for divorce from Cynthia and struck up a romance with Yoko Ono. Paul felt sorry for kids in broken homes, ya know? Funny thing is, John thought the song was about him! Anyway, the single lasts seven minutes, long for the time, and who can forget the four-minute, orchestral coda? By the way, “Hey Jude” was the first single produced by Apple Records; it also stayed at number one on the US charts for nine weeks, topping all other Beatles’ singles; and in 2013 Billboard named it the tenth best song ever.

Earlier on, as “heavy metal” emerged partially from the heavy psychedelic rock or acid rock scene, “acid rock” was often used interchangeably with “heavy metal” and “hard rock”. Musicologist Steve Waksman stated that “the distinction between acid rock, hard rock, and heavy metal can at some point never be more than tenuous”, while percussionist John Beck defined “acid rock” as synonymous with hard rock and heavy metal.

Jefferson who? It’s been decades since Jefferson Airplane/Starship front woman Grace Slick has recorded an album, and for good reason. The “White Rabbit” rocker has gone on record as saying she was in the biz well past her prime. “I left rock and roll professionally at about 49,” she told Vanity Fair in 2012. “That’s too long as far as I’m concerned.” Still, this rock goddess has been described as one of the best female vocalists of all time, so we’d love to hear just one more song. Slick is now a painter, so she’s knee deep in a whole other kind of hoopla.
They’re sparky, spiky and disgustingly young, and just to rub it in they’ve got the chops to back it all up. We enjoyed 2017 singles Ants, Let Her Be and I Love LA – not to mention the band’s blood-spattered live shows in London, spearheaded by gurning beanpole singer Arrow De Wilde (described, aptly, by Classic Rock’s Dave Everley as “what would have happened if Ozzy Osbourne and Patti Smith had got together sometime in 1975 and had a kid”).
For the 91st issue (in April 2006), the magazine presented ‘The 100 Greatest British Rock Albums Ever’, which were voted for by Classic Rock staff and various associated with rock music (including Glenn Hughes of Deep Purple and Black Sabbath fame, Lemmy of Motörhead and Francis Rossi of Status Quo). The magazine decided to let AC/DC be classed as a British act, although the band was formed in Australia. All of the band’s singers (Dave Evans, Bon Scott and Brian Johnson) and guitarists Angus and Malcolm Young are of UK descent. Led Zeppelin’s Led Zeppelin IV reached first place.
Journey is one of the most under rated bands. Neil Shone, Jonathan Cain & Steve Perry wrote some of Rock’s best known hit’s. Perry has been called “The Voice”. Neil Shone is as good a guitar player as any & Cain a master on keyboards. Journey is Rock & Roll!
Nobody does a heady, sweeping mix of rock and opera like Queen can, thanks to their fourth album A Night at the Opera in 1975. The LP contained the song “Bohemian Rhapsody,” which immortalized the band’s legendary status as one of rock’s most bombastic and electrifying acts.
Well, when we did the first “all 80’s” station in Columbus in 1998, I found that the rock product drove the bus. Alternative was a bit weaker and tested so at the time. But, we were a bit early in the curve (as today’s radio now shows), and my 20 something nephew talks a lot about 90’s alternative and grunge. So…my answer is a qualified maybe. It’s not always bad to be ahead of the curve. Sometimes, you’re just not in the right place at the right time.

So what makes any rock music classic? Is it in the artist, the high amount of radio plays, the millions of records sold, or musical styles and subjects tackled in the lyrics? Actually, none of these things are required for music to be considered “classic rock.” “Classic rock” doesn’t mean the 70s rock records became automatically a classic by the time they were released. Nor an artist that releases these records doesn’t necessarily become a classic rock artist. A record’s huge sales don’t mean that record instantly becomes classic rock. The Beatles and Led Zeppelin have different musical styles and themes from each other, but both of them are nevertheless considered classic rock artists because they released classic rock albums.

Interestingly, Jagger’s inspiration for the song came from the books of Baudelaire and Mikhail Bulgakov’s novel The Master and Margarita. The origin of the term “heavy metal” in a musical context is uncertain. The phrase has been used for centuries in chemistry and metallurgy, where the periodic table organizes elements of both light and heavy metals (e.g., uranium). An early use of the term in modern popular culture was by countercultural writer William S. Burroughs. His 1962 novel The Soft Machine includes a character known as “Uranian Willy, the Heavy Metal Kid”. Burroughs’ next novel, Nova Express (1964), develops the theme, using heavy metal as a metaphor for addictive drugs: “With their diseases and orgasm drugs and their sexless parasite life forms—Heavy Metal People of Uranus wrapped in cool blue mist of vaporized bank notes—And The Insect People of Minraud with metal music”. Inspired by Burroughs’ novels, the term was used in the title of the 1967 album Featuring the Human Host and the Heavy Metal Kids by Hapshash and the Coloured Coat, which has been claimed to be its first use in the context of music. The phrase was later lifted by Sandy Pearlman, who used the term to describe The Byrds for their supposed “aluminium style of context and effect”, particularly on their album The Notorious Byrd Brothers (1968).
