The Eagle’s song about the demise and decadence Hollywood show business went triple-platinum in the US alone, as well as selling well around the world. The success of the single helped its album Hotel California lift over 16 million copies. Needless to say, it has also become one of classic rock’s most memorable songs.

“Freebird,” a power ballad by Lynyrd Skynyrd, quickly became a rock and roll classic, particularly its long three-part guitar solo at the end of the tune. Released as a single and also as a longer version on the album, “Freebird” has become the band’s signature song and is generally played at the end of each concert appearance, lasting as long as 14 minutes, give or take. The group solo itself rose to #3 on Guitar World’s 100 Greatest Guitar Solos. Interestingly, the song is dedicated to Duane Allman and Berry Oakley, members of the Allman Brothers who died in motor cycle accidents in the early 1970s, and then became “freebirds.”

Along with providing the creative and intellectual direction for the company, Fred consults many of Jacobs Media’s commercial and public radio clients, in addition to media brands looking to thrive in the rapidly changing tech environment.

Journey is one of the most under rated bands. Neil Shone, Jonathan Cain & Steve Perry wrote some of Rock’s best known hit’s. Perry has been called “The Voice”. Neil Shone is as good a guitar player as any & Cain a master on keyboards. Journey is Rock & Roll!

I have done songs from pretty much every major guitarist of this era. In addition, there will always be more classic rock songs added to this page so make sure you check back here often if you don’t see something you would like to learn. It will probably make it onto to this page sooner or later. 🙂

Nice Not sure where people are getting the idea that this sampler is only free for 30 days unless they’re confusing the free trial for Google’s music service with it. The sampler is free indefinitely. Yes, it has limitations. You can only play tracks from Google within Google’s media player. Other than that, enjoy a few free tracks. I like it because I didn’t already have 3 of the tracks offered here.

The “Classic Alternative” concept floats to the service every few years or so.  As Derdeyn points out in his story, many Alternative bands from the ’80s (actually, they were more often referred to as “Modern Rock” back then) are still popular concert bands today – especially at the myriad summer festivals scheduled throughout North America.

^ Hannum, Terence (18 March 2016). “Instigate Sonic Violence: A Not-so-Brief History of the Synthesizer’s Impact on Heavy Metal”. noisey.vice.com. Vice. Retrieved 7 January 2017. In almost every subgenre of heavy metal, synthesizers held sway. Look at Cynic, who on their progressive death metal opus Focus (1993) had keyboards appear on the album and during live performances, or British gothic doom band My Dying Bride, who relied heavily on synths for their 1993 album, Turn Loose the Swans. American noise band Today is the Day used synthesizers on their 1996 self titled album to powerfully add to their din. Voivod even put synthesizers to use for the first time on 1991’s Angel Rat and 1993’s The Outer Limits, played by both guitarist Piggy and drummer Away. The 1990s were a gold era for the use of synthesizers in heavy metal, and only paved the way for the further explorations of the new millennia.

Tried a classic alternative format in ’93 – ’94. A little soon, perhaps, but it was met with a strong positive reaction by listeners who had a modern rock station in their market but didn’t listen to them anymore because they did not like grunge. As Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, etc… dominated modern rock station playlists, these listeners had nowhere to go. These “80’s cutting edge” listeners were not so cutting edge anymore with the turn of the decade (not to mention, when MTV wasn’t playing grunge, they were playing rap). I have noticed that classic alternative works pretty well as a cornerstone in a Triple AAA format, but as a standalone format itself, I believe you are correct Mr. Jacobs.

The Silvertones are four piece Blues band that also does classic rock songs from the 60s, 70s, and 80s. They were founded in 1993 by Brian Wicker and Kyle Copeland. Their inaugural gig was at The Filling Station in Terrell , Texas. Like all bands, The Silvertones have had several line-up changes through the years. The Silvertones’ music, over half of which is original, reflects the various influences that the band members grew up with. It’s primarily blues, with hints of jazz, swing,… (more)

Emerging in the mid-1980s with such bands as California’s Saint Vitus, Maryland’s The Obsessed, Chicago’s Trouble, and Sweden’s Candlemass, the doom metal movement rejected other metal styles’ emphasis on speed, slowing its music to a crawl. Doom metal traces its roots to the lyrical themes and musical approach of early Black Sabbath.[241] The Melvins have also been a significant influence on doom metal and a number of its subgenres.[242] Doom emphasizes melody, melancholy tempos, and a sepulchral mood relative to many other varieties of metal.[243]

This young British progressive quintet created new, incendiary ground between Pink Floyd and Radiohead (plus moody touches of Opeth and My Bloody Valentine for good measure) with their self-titled debut in 2017. This year they’re taking their formula to the masses in a major way, starting the new year with an appearance at January’s Rockaway Festival.

Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour and Roger Waters are almost as famous for their feuding as they are for their music — and although they were bandmates for nearly two decades, their personality conflicts precluded true collaboration for many of those years. One notable exception: the No. 9 song on o…

This song will never get old. Although there are many songs on this list that I also love. This is the song which first popped into my brain when I first thought of great classic rock. It perfectly encompasses that intangeble sound of awesome 70’s hard rock. It truely is a flawless gem, which makes me feel stuff in my… Uh emotions.

Singer-songwriter Pete Townshend perhaps became the unofficial spokesman of the 60s youth through his anthem “My Generation.” From their hard-driving blues-rock, The Who expanded their creativity and musical ambitions, climaxing in their 1969 album Tommy, a highly influential rock opera/concept album that became a huge masterpiece. They followed their streak with Who’s Next, another classic rock masterpiece. Their golden era ended following the death of drummer Keith Moon.

These guys were basically the first to introduce synthsisers, something that most everyone else has relied on in their music. This band has tested rock time and time again and they have revolutionized it, creating some of the best and most favorite Classic Rock songs of all time. It is even said that Led Zepplin and many other British originated groups and singers, including U2, were influenced by these guys. The band includes one of the greatest guitarist, greatest drummer, and greatest bassist of all time. There is a reason they have been around for nearly fifty years and continue to perform.

12. “I Believe In You” by Stryper. Does time seem to pass you by? Released in the summer of 1988, this Christian Rock ballad embodies what the real meaning of love is. From Stryper’s hit album In God We Trust, this song is worthy of being in anyone’s love song playlist.

Though Judas Priest did not have a top 40 album in the United States until 1980, for many it was the definitive post-Sabbath heavy metal band; its twin-guitar attack, featuring rapid tempos and a non-bluesy, more cleanly metallic sound, was a major influence on later acts.[5] While heavy metal was growing in popularity, most critics were not enamored of the music. Objections were raised to metal’s adoption of visual spectacle and other trappings of commercial artifice,[177] but the main offense was its musical and lyrical vacuity: reviewing a Black Sabbath album in the early 1970s, leading critic Robert Christgau described it as “dull and decadent…dim-witted, amoral exploitation.”[178]

  1. Once the Greg Simpson Band takes the stage their rock-star persona becomes immediately apparent. Greg is an exceptional talent that relies on his gritty vocals to transform classics from Journey, the Eagles, Styx, Fleetwood Mac, and many others into fresh-sounding masterpieces. His musicianship is well-respected in the industry and he has shared the stage with many notable artists such as Jewel, SheDaisy, and Shane Jackman. Greg Simpson is an amazing concert performer, but is also great for dances, parties, fairs, corporate events, and festivals.
During the mid-1980s, the classic rock format was mainly tailored to the adult male demographic ages 25–34, which remained its largest demographic through the mid-1990s.[15] As the format’s audience aged, its demographics skewed toward older age groups. By 2006, the 35–44 age group was the format’s largest audience[16] and by 2014 the 45–54 year-old demographic was the largest.[17]

While these bands may do well at state fairs and other summer festivals boasting well-stocked lineups of bands, their ability to support a format is questionable.  Classic Rock – and its derivatives – as well as Oldies stations were predicated on the power of nostalgia – not just for a few thousand fans in a market, but for tens of thousands or more of die-hard supporters.  We’re talking mass appeal vs. niche.
