^ Though often identified now as “hard rock”, the band’s official debut album, Mountain Climbing (1970), placed 85th on the list of “Top 100 Metal Albums” compiled by Hit Parader in 1989. In November, Love Sculpture, with guitarist Dave Edmunds, put out Forms and Feelings, featuring a pounding, aggressive version of Khachaturian’s “Sabre Dance”. Grand Funk Railroad’s Survival (1971) placed 72nd (Walser [1993], p. 174).

Classic rock formulated as a radio format in the early 1980s. It features commercially successful rock music and artists / bands from the 60s to the late 80s. The format is often referred to as album-orientated rock (aor) which is defined by use of rock album tracks with a large commercial appeal.

Personally, I’m a fan of a lot of this stuff, despite the fact it received consistently sporadic airplay in Detroit where I programmed.  Oddly enough, one of my favorite satellite music channels is “1st Wave,” which features a steady diet of bands like New Order, Depeche Mode, and others that Derdyn mentions in his column.  I would bet the folks at SiriusXM would tell us it’s not among the most popular of their themed music formats.

In 2010, Collins released “Going Back,” which is considered to be his final studio album. But could a comeback ever happen? Collins addressed his retirement on his website, revealing that he stopped his music career so he could be “a full time father to my two young sons on a daily basis.” Fans can only hope that maybe once his kids grow up he’ll be back.

The 1991 release of Forest of Equilibrium, the debut album by UK band Cathedral, helped spark a new wave of doom metal. During the same period, the doom-death fusion style of British bands Paradise Lost, My Dying Bride, and Anathema gave rise to European gothic metal,[244] with its signature dual-vocalist arrangements, exemplified by Norway’s Theatre of Tragedy and Tristania. New York’s Type O Negative introduced an American take on the style.[245]

Aerosmith is still my favorite classic rock band by far, their variety in musical tone in their songs is what stands out he most from “Dude Looks Like A Lady” to “I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing” just amazing music top to bottom!

In some predominantly Muslim countries, heavy metal has been officially denounced as a threat to traditional values. In countries such as Morocco, Egypt, Lebanon, Malaysia, there have been incidents of heavy metal musicians and fans being arrested and incarcerated.[65] In 1997, the Egyptian police jailed many young metal fans and they were accused of “devil worship” and blasphemy, after police found metal recordings during searches of their homes.[64] In 2013, Malaysia banned Lamb of God from performing in their country, on the grounds that the “band’s lyrics could be interpreted as being religiously insensitive” and blasphemous.[66] Some people considered heavy metal music to being a leading factor for mental health disorders, and thought that heavy metal fans were more likely to suffer with a poor mental health, but study has proven that this is not true and the fans of this music have a lower or similar percentage of people suffering from poor mental health.[67]

Earlier in the week, musicologist, radio pro, and mega-blogger Alan Cross posed today’s post title as a question in his highly entertaining blog, “A Journal of Musical Things.”  Quoting a story in the Vancouver Province by Stuart Derdeyn, the burning issue on the table is whether “Classic Alternative” is poised to be the next incarnation of Classic Rock.

The metal scene has been characterized as a “subculture of alienation”, with its own code of authenticity.[84] This code puts several demands on performers: they must appear both completely devoted to their music and loyal to the subculture that supports it; they must appear uninterested in mainstream appeal and radio hits; and they must never “sell out”.[85] Deena Weinstein states that for the fans themselves, the code promotes “opposition to established authority, and separateness from the rest of society”.[86]

Classic Rock was a genre mostly defined by US FM radio formats in the 1970s, growing out of the earlier Album Orientated Rock format. It was a harder, often Blues and Prog influenced style and was a reaction against both Punk / New Wave and Disco. This style is not correctly applied to sixties or 70s Pop Rock, Beat or Garage Rock bands, such as The Beatles, The Yardbirds or The Rolling Stones (pre 1970).
