This song and “Stairway to Heaven” are usually competing neck-and-neck for the greatest classic song of all time. With operatic and hard-rock influences, as well as its iconic music video, “Bohemian Rhapsody” became one of the best-selling singles in the world by the time it was released, as well as growing to become a classic rock staple.

So what makes any rock music classic? Is it in the artist, the high amount of radio plays, the millions of records sold, or musical styles and subjects tackled in the lyrics? Actually, none of these things are required for music to be considered “classic rock.” “Classic rock” doesn’t mean the 70s rock records became automatically a classic by the time they were released. Nor an artist that releases these records doesn’t necessarily become a classic rock artist. A record’s huge sales don’t mean that record instantly becomes classic rock. The Beatles and Led Zeppelin have different musical styles and themes from each other, but both of them are nevertheless considered classic rock artists because they released classic rock albums.

Classic Rock reviews any release that even comes close to being classified as rock, including albums, DVDs, concerts and books. It includes an annual award for best new band. Acts such as Rose Hill Drive, Muse, DragonForce, The Trews, Wolfmother and The Answer have all been featured.

But you don’t address another point. These 80’s bands (and OF COURSE I recognized Echo & The Bunneymen, and further know that Echo was the drum machine) had some hits. But they were never “album” bands.

In relation to the gender composition of heavy metal bands, performers tended to be almost exclusively male[31] until at least the mid-1980s[32] apart from exceptions such as Girlschool.[31] However, “now [in the 2010s] maybe more than ever–strong metal women have put up their dukes and got down to it”,[33] “carv[ing] out a considerable place for [them]selves”.[34] A 2013 article[who?] states that metal “clearly empowers women”.[35] In the sub-genres of symphonic and power metal, there has been a sizable number of bands that have had women as the lead singers, bands such as Nightwish, Delain, and Within Temptation have featured women as lead singers with men playing instruments.

In 1968, the sound that would become known as heavy metal began to coalesce. That January, the San Francisco band Blue Cheer released a cover of Eddie Cochran’s classic “Summertime Blues”, from their debut album Vincebus Eruptum, that many consider the first true heavy metal recording.[132] The same month, Steppenwolf released its self-titled debut album, including “Born to Be Wild”, which refers to “heavy metal thunder” in describing a motorcycle. Sorrow, released in December, featured “proto heavy metal” songs such as “Old Man Going” and “I See You”.[136][137] Iron Butterfly’s 1968 song “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida” is sometimes described as an example of the transition between acid rock and heavy metal[138] or the turning point in which acid rock became “heavy metal”,[139] and both Iron Butterfly’s 1968 album In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida and Blue Cheer’s 1968 album Vincebus Eruptum have been described as laying the foundation of heavy metal and greatly influential in the transformation of acid rock into heavy metal.[140]

As far as classic rock bands go Rush is very very very very very very good. I mean it is very impossible to play like them and their music is more than music I know this stuff because my dad learned off the internet how to get songs on your ipod playlist on your car radio so I hear a lot of old songs even though I am only turning 13 in a week and a half.

Seriously? Forty-seven? Why is this song at 47? This song belongs in the top 10. Amazing vocals, an unforgettable chorus, a memorable guitar solo, terrific all-around performance, and everything else required for a song for the ages. Why this song clocks in at 47 simply defies belief.

Don Henley of the Eagles wanted to write a song about life in Los Angeles, California, particularly its emphasis on fame, hedonism and money. Henley wrote, “It’s basically a song about the dark underbelly of the American dream and about excess in America, which is something we knew a lot about.” Henley wanted the song, decidedly somber, and played in harmonic minor, seem like an episode of the Twilight Zone, which it certainly does. Apparently the song worked on many levels, because it won the Grammy Award for Record of the Year in 1978. And the dueling guitars coda was rated the greatest guitar solo by Guitarist magazine in 1998.

When Aerosmith was on the threshold of their career during the 1970s, people started comparing them to Rolling Stones. Despite the blues-rock influence similar to The Stones (not to mention front man Steven Tyler’s resemblance to Mick Jagger), the comparison wasn’t really fair to either band. The naysayers seemed to stop when Aerosmith came out with their third LP Toys in the Attic in 1975 that helped them to make their unique mark in the rock music field.

One of seven hit singles from their fabulous album, Hysteria, which sold 25 million copies worldwide, “Pour Some Sugar on Me” became one of the best stripper songs of all time, if nothing else. Also, in case you’re interested, the song reached #2 on VH1’s 100 Greatest Songs of the 1980s in 2006; and the video for the song was rated #1 on MTV’s list of the Top 300 Videos of All Time. It seems safe to point out that the tune is synonymous with Def Leppard’s greatest success as a rock group.

By the early 2010s, metalcore was evolving to more frequently incorporate synthesizers and elements from genres beyond rock and metal. The album Reckless & Relentless by British band Asking Alexandria (which sold 31,000 copies in its first week), and The Devil Wears Prada’s 2011 album Dead Throne (which sold 32,400 in its first week)[290] reached up to number 9 and 10,[291] respectively, on the Billboard 200 chart. In 2013, British band Bring Me the Horizon released their fourth studio album Sempiternal to critical acclaim. The album debuted at number 3 on the UK Album Chart and at number 1 in Australia. The album sold 27,522 copies in the US, and charted at number 11 on the US Billboard Chart, making it their highest charting release in America until their follow-up album That’s the Spirit debuted at no. 2 in 2015.
