In 1968, three of the genre’s most famous pioneers, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple were founded.[4] Though they came to attract wide audiences, they were often derided by critics. During the mid-1970s, Judas Priest helped spur the genre’s evolution by discarding much of its blues influence;[5][6] Motörhead introduced a punk rock sensibility and an increasing emphasis on speed. Beginning in the late 1970s, bands in the new wave of British heavy metal such as Iron Maiden and Saxon followed in a similar vein. Before the end of the decade, heavy metal fans became known as “metalheads” or “headbangers”.

Just listen 2 the lyrics. Lennon a lyrical genius. He could come up with a simple word 2 match McCartney’s tune or lyrics 2 write a complete song. I just hope the world realizes the music genius we lost when he was murdered on December 8 1980.

Seriously? Forty-seven? Why is this song at 47? This song belongs in the top 10. Amazing vocals, an unforgettable chorus, a memorable guitar solo, terrific all-around performance, and everything else required for a song for the ages. Why this song clocks in at 47 simply defies belief.

Smoke on the Water is the most well known song world. You know most Americans are light weight rockers. Deep Purple ruled in most corners of the world. They were the most influential with the most history and the other great bands that came from the Purple tree with the best guitarist in the business. Ritchie s peers will tell you he was the best and influenced more guitarist world wide. And a much longer career than all those other guys. This is a insult to the most known Riff ever.

In this counterculture period MC5, who began as part of the Detroit garage rock scene, developed a raw distorted style that has been seen as a major influence on the future sound of both heavy metal and later punk music.[141][142] The Stooges also began to establish and influence a heavy metal and later punk sound, with songs such as “I Wanna Be Your Dog”, featuring pounding and distorted heavy guitar power chord riffs.[143] Pink Floyd released two of their heaviest and loudest songs to date; “Ibiza Bar” and “The Nile Song”, which was regarded as “one of the heaviest songs the band recorded”.[144][145] King Crimson’s debut album started with “21st Century Schizoid Man,” which was considered heavy metal by several critics.[146][147]

I suppose it’s just a generation gap speaking, but I wouldn’t have included most of the 80s songs that you did. I’d have included songs like My Generation, Respect, What I’d Say, and Like A Rolling Stone. This list just goes to show that rock has a lot of classics.

So who defines the parameters of this seemingly genre-free category? It’s actually  you – the listener. Very little is played on classic rock stations without extensive market research to find a niche amongst their audience, and that’s how regional popularity will always trump age or genre in defining the musical category of classic rock. Read more here about the carefully crafted classic rock subset and how age alone isn’t the only thing that can make a song truly “classic.”

Classic Rock was a genre mostly defined by US FM radio formats in the 1970s, growing out of the earlier Album Orientated Rock format. It was a harder, often Blues and Prog influenced style and was a reaction against both Punk / New Wave and Disco. This style is not correctly applied to sixties or 70s Pop Rock, Beat or Garage Rock bands, such as The Beatles, The Yardbirds or The Rolling Stones (pre 1970).

42 Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are an American rock band from Gainesville, Florida. In 1976, the band’s original lineup was Tom Petty as the lead singer and guitar player, Mike Campbell as the lead guitarist, Ron Blair on bass, Stan Lynch on drums, and Benmont Tench on keyboards.

U2 is one of the best bands ever! With or Without You, One, Where the Streets Have No Name… Really guys. Lots of the higher-ranked bands are mildly painful to listen to. U2 has way more good songs than some of those bands. Bono is the best, the Edge is fabulous on guitar. If you really listen to some of their songs, not just their most recent album, you would agree with me.

Music scholar Jon Stratton traced classic rock’s origins to the emergence of a classic-rock canon.[20] This canon arose in part from music journalism and superlative lists ranking certain albums and songs that are consequently reinforced to the collective and public memory.[21] Robert Christgau said the classic-rock concept transmogrified rock music into a “myth of rock as art-that-stands-the-test-of-time”, and believed the canonizing of certain rock artists by critics, major media, and music establishment entities such as the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was inevitable.[22] Media academic Roy Shuker said classic-rock radio programmers largely play “tried and proven” hit songs from the past based on their “high listener recognition and identification”; he identified white male rock acts from the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper era through the end of the 1970s as the focus of their playlists.[19] As Catherine Strong observed, classic rock songs are generally performed by white male acts from either the United States or the United Kingdom, “have a four-four time, very rarely exceed the time limit of four minutes, were composed by the musicians themselves, are sung in English, played by a ‘classical’ rock formation (drums, bass, guitar, keyboard instruments) and were released on a major label after 1964.”[21]

During their time Queen was one of the wildly famous rock bands, with their concerts selling millions around the world and their singles enjoying huge commercial success. Despite the astronomical success, Queen still strived to experiment with their sound especially during the early 1980s. Their charismatic founder and front man Freddie Mercury was struck by AIDS and eventually died from complications in 1991.

Earlier on, as “heavy metal” emerged partially from the heavy psychedelic rock or acid rock scene, “acid rock” was often used interchangeably with “heavy metal” and “hard rock”. Musicologist Steve Waksman stated that “the distinction between acid rock, hard rock, and heavy metal can at some point never be more than tenuous”,[106] while percussionist John Beck defined “acid rock” as synonymous with hard rock and heavy metal.[107]

In the mid- and late 1990s came a new wave of U.S. metal groups inspired by the alternative metal bands and their mix of genres.[259] Dubbed “nu metal”, bands such as Slipknot, Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, Papa Roach, P.O.D., Korn and Disturbed incorporated elements ranging from death metal to hip hop, often including DJs and rap-style vocals. The mix demonstrated that “pancultural metal could pay off”.[260] Nu metal gained mainstream success through heavy MTV rotation and Ozzy Osbourne’s 1996 introduction of Ozzfest, which led the media to talk of a resurgence of heavy metal.[261] In 1999, Billboard noted that there were more than 500 specialty metal radio shows in the United States, nearly three times as many as ten years before.[262] While nu metal was widely popular, traditional metal fans did not fully embrace the style.[263] By early 2003, the movement’s popularity was on the wane, though several nu metal acts such as Korn or Limp Bizkit retained substantial followings.[264]
