Van Halen has some of the most infamous songs in rock history out there, but we do have to remember, this is one of those rare bands that have more than one hit. In fact, they have a good handful of songs that you can call your favorite, definitely not a one hit wonder!
Chris Cornell’s widow is sure she knows why he committed suicide — drugs impaired his judgment. After Cornell hung himself last May in Detroit, a coroner’s report said that he had seven different drugs in his system — though it insisted that none of them had contributed to his suicide. And shortly before his death,…
With an ominous mood set from the first notes, we know for certain that “the storm is threatening” on the Rolling Stones’ haunting and powerful ‘Gimme Shelter.’ It’s ‘Apocalypse Now,’ in just over four minutes.
Derdeyn notes many of these bands didn’t get a “fair shake” when they first hit the music scene back in the ’80s. And certainly here in the States, there were many markets that did not have a true Modern Rock station back then. Most of these songs didn’t cross over to Top 40, while most mainstream rockers (known in those days as AOR) didn’t touch them. They were visible on MTV during that time, but less prominently played on FM radio.
One band that reached diverse audiences was Guns N’ Roses. In contrast to their glam metal contemporaries in L.A., they were seen as much more raw and dangerous. With the release of their chart-topping Appetite for Destruction (1987), they “recharged and almost single-handedly sustained the Sunset Strip sleaze system for several years”. The following year, Jane’s Addiction emerged from the same L.A. hard-rock club scene with its major label debut, Nothing’s Shocking. Reviewing the album, Rolling Stone declared, “as much as any band in existence, Jane’s Addiction is the true heir to Led Zeppelin”. The group was one of the first to be identified with the “alternative metal” trend that would come to the fore in the next decade. Meanwhile, new bands such as New York’s Winger and New Jersey’s Skid Row sustained the popularity of the glam metal style.
Is love suppose to be based on what you want in the relationship or what they want in the relationship? What about reciprocation? Released in 1977, this soft rock ballad shows a different side of Cooper that we have never seen before.

Singer-songwriter Pete Townshend perhaps became the unofficial spokesman of the 60s youth through his anthem “My Generation.” From their hard-driving blues-rock, The Who expanded their creativity and musical ambitions, climaxing in their 1969 album Tommy, a highly influential rock opera/concept album that became a huge masterpiece. They followed their streak with Who’s Next, another classic rock masterpiece. Their golden era ended following the death of drummer Keith Moon.
The magazine focuses on established bands with credentials dating back to the 1960s. Indeed, many of the artists who have appeared on its cover are deceased (Jimi Hendrix and Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy featured on early covers, as did bands with deceased members such as Queen and The Who).
Aerosmith is still my favorite classic rock band by far, their variety in musical tone in their songs is what stands out he most from “Dude Looks Like A Lady” to “I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing” just amazing music top to bottom!
Hi all, Memphis Rain’s gig at the Liberty had a great crowd and we were joined on stage by some of our musician friends on a few songs. John Gregus thumped on the drums, Tom “Bump” McCarthy blew some blue harp while Matt Cere sang a number of rockers. Our next gig at this time is at Frenchy’s in Roselle Park Friday, June 2nd.
The guy that left the other comment on here is a complete moron! He rips AC/DC who are rock icons and puts a crappy grunge band(Nirvana), a way overrated band(Aerosmith & Pink Floyd) and a no talent band (RHCP) in his top 10? Outside of Led Zeppelin, Guns-n-Roses, & Metallica your list sucks dude! And Rush? They may be good musicians, but their music sucks! They’re the same as Primus, good musicians, crappy music!
Smoke on the water has to be the most known song ever created.. Everyone knows the riff.. Its on the dodge commerical. Barracuda is the worst song I have ever heard. What arr you people smokin’? – superguy35
There are bands that don’t have a single other band to even come close to them. Led Zeppelin had some of the guitar solos the world has ever seen. Jimmy Page re-defined the way people play the guitar. Robert Plant is the greatest screamer ever. He actually sounds good. John Paul Jones was the fastest bassist trying to keep up with Jimmy when he did a guitar solo. Not many people could do that. And then you’ve got the greatest drummer ever who sat behind a drum kit. His solo in Rock and Roll is one of the greatest I’ve ever heard. And that brings me o my final quote: LED ZEPPELIN RULE!

6 The Rolling Stones The Rolling Stones are an English rock band formed in London in 1962. One of seven hit singles from their fabulous album, Hysteria, which sold 25 million copies worldwide, “Pour Some Sugar on Me” became one of the best stripper songs of all time, if nothing else. Also, in case you’re interested, the song reached #2 on VH1’s 100 Greatest Songs of the 1980s in 2006; and the video for the song was rated #1 on MTV’s list of the Top 300 Videos of All Time. It seems safe to point out that the tune is synonymous with Def Leppard’s greatest success as a rock group.
In the 2000s, an extreme metal fusion genre known as deathcore emerged. Deathcore incorporates elements of death metal, hardcore punk and metalcore. Deathcore features characteristics such as death metal riffs, hardcore punk breakdowns, death growling, “pig squeal”-sounding vocals, and screaming. Deathcore bands include Whitechapel, Suicide Silence, Despised Icon and Carnifex.
Musician and filmmaker Rob Zombie observes, “Most of the kids who come to my shows seem like really imaginative kids with a lot of creative energy they don’t know what to do with” and that metal is “outsider music for outsiders. Nobody wants to be the weird kid; you just somehow end up being the weird kid. It’s kind of like that, but with metal you have all the weird kids in one place”. Scholars of metal have noted the tendency of fans to classify and reject some performers (and some other fans) as “poseurs” “who pretended to be part of the subculture, but who were deemed to lack authenticity and sincerity”.
In 1990, a review in Rolling Stone suggested retiring the term “heavy metal” as the genre was “ridiculously vague”. The article stated that the term only fueled “misperceptions of rock & roll bigots who still assume that five bands as different as Ratt, Extreme, Anthrax, Danzig and Mother Love Bone” sound the same.
Producing great music from the first minute, these guys took it to the limit! Made many legendary songs like Hotel California, Take It Easy, One Of These Nights etc. Etc. One of the best bands ever in rock, true legends!
What makes them great? Their shows and their longevity. While other older bands understandably slow down over the years, this group keeps pumping out anthem like music. Catchy rock music that could have been hits in the Rock n Roll heyday of the 80’s and 90’s. With that said, in the 21st Century alone they’ve won a Grammy and the Black Ice Tour was the 4th largest tour in HISTORY. Black Ice sold more albums world wide besides Cold Play. In 2007 AC/DC sold 3 million albums yet hadn’t produced new songs in 8 YEARS at that point. If you don’t think these aging rockers are still relavent then please check out the Live @ Rivee Plate. Their stage presence is as good as ever. Johnson is in terrific shape and they play to the frenzied crowd like never before. And, This is the AC/DC that could be retired and people would understand. Now: they have Rock Or Bust. Tickets sold so fast for European tour that it broke Guinness world records for most sales in least time. 1.75 million tickets in less …more
Never has alienation sounded so beautiful and brilliant as in Pink Floyd’s song “Wish You Were Here.” Even up to the 21st century this song is still popular as it’s been streamed over a million times on Spotify.
Led Zeppelin defined central aspects of the emerging genre, with Page’s highly distorted guitar style and singer Robert Plant’s dramatic, wailing vocals. Other bands, with a more consistently heavy, “purely” metal sound, would prove equally important in codifying the genre. The 1970 releases by Black Sabbath (Black Sabbath and Paranoid) and Deep Purple (In Rock) were crucial in this regard.
The first generation of metal bands was ceding the limelight. Deep Purple had broken up soon after Blackmore’s departure in 1975, and Led Zeppelin broke up following drummer John Bonham’s death in 1980. Black Sabbath plagued with infighting and substance abuse, while facing fierce competition with their opening band, the Los Angeles band Van Halen. Eddie Van Halen established himself as one of the leading metal guitarists of the era. His solo on “Eruption”, from the band’s self-titled 1978 album, is considered a milestone. Eddie Van Halen’s sound even crossed over into pop music when his guitar solo was featured on the track “Beat It” by Michael Jackson (a U.S. number 1 in February 1983).

Shai Hulud, a name that is synonymous (in heavy music circles at least) with intelligent, provocative and most importantly unique metallic hardcore. The band’s earliest release is widely credited with influencing an entire generation of musicians
