One of many Aerosmith hit singles in the 1970s, “Walk This Way” is a hard rock tune appearing on the band’s third studio album, Toys in the Attic, which is their highest selling album to date. “Walk This Way” jumped to #10 on the Billboard Hot 100. Then, during the 1980s, when Aerosmith hit a lull in popularity, the rap group Run-D.M.C re-made the song, with Aerosmith vocalist Steven Tyler and guitarist Joe Perry making guest appearances in the tune and on the video. Surprisingly, this version of the song did even better on the Billboard Hot 100, climbing to #5, and also helped spawn a new genre – rap rock.

In the early 1990s, thrash achieved breakout success, challenging and redefining the metal mainstream.[210] Metallica’s self-titled 1991 album topped the Billboard chart,[211] as the band established international following.[212] Megadeth’s Countdown to Extinction (1992) debuted at number two,[213] Anthrax and Slayer cracked the top 10,[214] and albums by regional bands such as Testament and Sepultura entered the top 100.[215]

Yup, an LA thing. Maybe a Left Coast thing, but a market almost had to support a strong Modern Rock station back in the ’80s in order to have a sufficient nostalgic base. And yes, there’s the jock/presentation piece – something that’s too easy to overlook. Thanks, Dan.

Classic rock denotes a music style of rock that came into being in the time period between 1965 and 1975. The term itself was first coined in 1981 by the then newly established radio station WYSP. This station exclusively played various styles of rock music that were popular at that time.

The subgenre was popularized by the “Big Four of Thrash”: Metallica, Anthrax, Megadeth, and Slayer.[204] Three German bands, Kreator, Sodom, and Destruction, played a central role in bringing the style to Europe. Closely related to power metal is progressive metal, which adopts the complex compositional approach of bands like Rush and King Crimson. This style emerged in the United States in the early and mid-1980s, with innovators such as Queensrÿche, Fates Warning, and Dream Theater. The mix of the progressive and power metal sounds is typified by New Jersey’s Symphony X, whose guitarist Michael Romeo is among the most recognized of latter-day shredders.[240]

During the late 1980s, the power metal scene came together largely in reaction to the harshness of death and black metal.[235] Though a relatively underground style in North America, it enjoys wide popularity in Europe, Japan, and South America. Power metal focuses on upbeat, epic melodies and themes that “appeal to the listener’s sense of valor and loveliness”.[236] The prototype for the sound was established in the mid-to-late 1980s by Germany’s Helloween, which combined the power riffs, melodic approach, and high-pitched, “clean” singing style of bands like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden with thrash’s speed and energy, “crystalliz[ing] the sonic ingredients of what is now known as power metal”.[237]
