I wondered when this would happen. LA would be the perfect launching pad for this look back at the 80’s. KROQ was a huge hit in that market playing thr Ramones, Pretenders, Sex Pistols etc. it was also a darn good radio experience with a staff of interesting radio personalities and a great sense of humor.

6 The Rolling Stones The Rolling Stones are an English rock band formed in London in 1962. ^ “Riffs”. Lucian K. Truscott IV for the Village Voice. January 22, 1970. “Led Zeppelin, popularly looked on as an English version of Blue Cheer, given to Vanilla Fudgeish heavy-handedness in all that it does, has come out with a good album, ‘Led Zeppelin II’ (Atlantic SD 8236). Sure, it’s ‘heavy.’ Sure, it’s volume-rock at a time when the trend seems to be toward acoustical niceties of country music”.

Like many English bands during the 1960s, The Who were influenced by American rock and roll, R&B, and blues music. However, they decided to change the game that set them apart from their peers — literally smashing instruments and pushing themselves musically into gargantuan proportions. The Who is one of the few bands who could be electrifying and brilliant at the same time, both during a live concert and on their records.

First played by Richard Berry and the Pharaohs, “Louie Louie” is one of the most played rock tunes of all time. In the old days, this was usually the first tune learned by rock guitarists (the chords A, D, Em,D). Often considered a dirty song, though it isn’t – but you know how inventive kids can be – a seemingly endless number of bands have covered this song, often adding a guitar or saxophone solo, but The Kingsmen in 1963 may have produced the most popular version, though the lyrics are barely intelligible, as they often are in rock songs.

^ Though often identified now as “hard rock”, the band’s official debut album, Mountain Climbing (1970), placed 85th on the list of “Top 100 Metal Albums” compiled by Hit Parader in 1989. In November, Love Sculpture, with guitarist Dave Edmunds, put out Forms and Feelings, featuring a pounding, aggressive version of Khachaturian’s “Sabre Dance”. During the mid-1980s, the classic rock format was mainly tailored to the adult male demographic ages 25–34, which remained its largest demographic through the mid-1990s.[15] As the format’s audience aged, its demographics skewed toward older age groups. By 2006, the 35–44 age group was the format’s largest audience[16] and by 2014 the 45–54 year-old demographic was the largest.[17]

The lyrics relate to a real event experienced by members of Deep Purple, while staying at an entertainment complex near the Montreux Casino. Suddenly a fire broke out in the theatre where The Mothers of Invention were playing and the casino was soon destroyed. But while watching smoke drift across a nearby lake, Deep Purple created the words to a classic rock tune, “Smoke on the Water.” Released in 1973, it reached #4 on Billboard’s pop singles chart. Also SOTW is often considered one of the best metal songs of all time, highlighted as it is by its iconic, though simple, opening riff.

Greatest song ever. Easily the best Beatles song, and if it’s the best song of the greatest and most inspirational band out there, then it’s got to top the chart. Even ROlling Stone magazine says it’s number one!

Lead vocalist Jon Bon Jovi admired the heroes of the Old West, even the anti-heroes or outlaws, which he likened to rockers who traveled about the country, living the wild life in all the towns and cities where they performed. So he and Richie Sambora wrote the song “Wanted Dead or Alive,” which became Bon Jovi’s anthem. Released on the album, Slippery When Wet, “Wanted Dead or Alive” along with “Livin’ on a Prayer” and “Never Say Goodbye” all soared to the Top Ten of Billboard’s Hot 100, the first hard rock album to have three top singles. Not bad for Bon Jovi, a so-called Hair Metal band!

  1. This song just speaks to you on so many volumes and really defines what a rock song is. Todays music is all about telling your story and a fantasy you want to live in. But what dream on does best is it’s a sing that has a different meaning from each and every perspective. This is when music was not about me but we.
So what makes any rock music classic? Is it in the artist, the high amount of radio plays, the millions of records sold, or musical styles and subjects tackled in the lyrics? Actually, none of these things are required for music to be considered “classic rock.” “Classic rock” doesn’t mean the 70s rock records became automatically a classic by the time they were released. Nor an artist that releases these records doesn’t necessarily become a classic rock artist. A record’s huge sales don’t mean that record instantly becomes classic rock. The Beatles and Led Zeppelin have different musical styles and themes from each other, but both of them are nevertheless considered classic rock artists because they released classic rock albums.
