12. “I Believe In You” by Stryper. Does time seem to pass you by? Released in the summer of 1988, this Christian Rock ballad embodies what the real meaning of love is. From Stryper’s hit album In God We Trust, this song is worthy of being in anyone’s love song playlist.

Yes deserves to be on this list because, like Queen, they were totally unique and very talented musically. Hard to believe bands like Motley Crue are above them. Any decent cover band can play a Motley Crue song as well as the original, but no one even attempts Yes songs because you have to be great musically.

Tried a classic alternative format in ’93 – ’94. A little soon, perhaps, but it was met with a strong positive reaction by listeners who had a modern rock station in their market but didn’t listen to them anymore because they did not like grunge. As Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, etc… dominated modern rock station playlists, these listeners had nowhere to go. These “80’s cutting edge” listeners were not so cutting edge anymore with the turn of the decade (not to mention, when MTV wasn’t playing grunge, they were playing rap). I have noticed that classic alternative works pretty well as a cornerstone in a Triple AAA format, but as a standalone format itself, I believe you are correct Mr. Jacobs.

Classic rock denotes a music style of rock that came into being in the time period between 1965 and 1975. The term itself was first coined in 1981 by the then newly established radio station WYSP. This station exclusively played various styles of rock music that were popular at that time.

Greatest song ever. Easily the best Beatles song, and if it’s the best song of the greatest and most inspirational band out there, then it’s got to top the chart. Even ROlling Stone magazine says it’s number one!

Amazon is on it. I am blown away by how well they have their finger on the pulse of so many things, and this playlist is a prime example (pardon the pun). These songs are from my youth, and this would have been a playlist to die for when I was in high school. Loving that I can listen to all of them so easily all these years later. Thank you, Amazon.

“Ideologically, ‘classic rock’ serves to confirm the dominant status of a particular period of music history – the emergence of rock in the mid-1960s – with its associated values and set of practices: live performance, self-expression, and authenticity; the group as the creative unit, with the charismatic lead singer playing a key role, and the guitar as the primary instrument. This was a version of classic Romanticism, an ideology with its origins in art and aesthetics.”

One of the major pillars of classic rock, Led Zeppelin’s devil-may-care attitude and penchant for breaking old rules and making new ones are the reasons why they became wildly successful. The origin of the term “heavy metal” in a musical context is uncertain. The phrase has been used for centuries in chemistry and metallurgy, where the periodic table organizes elements of both light and heavy metals (e.g., uranium). An early use of the term in modern popular culture was by countercultural writer William S. Burroughs. His 1962 novel The Soft Machine includes a character known as “Uranian Willy, the Heavy Metal Kid”. Burroughs’ next novel, Nova Express (1964), develops the theme, using heavy metal as a metaphor for addictive drugs: “With their diseases and orgasm drugs and their sexless parasite life forms—Heavy Metal People of Uranus wrapped in cool blue mist of vaporized bank notes—And The Insect People of Minraud with metal music”.[89] Inspired by Burroughs’ novels,[90] the term was used in the title of the 1967 album Featuring the Human Host and the Heavy Metal Kids by Hapshash and the Coloured Coat, which has been claimed to be its first use in the context of music.[91] The phrase was later lifted by Sandy Pearlman, who used the term to describe The Byrds for their supposed “aluminium style of context and effect”, particularly on their album The Notorious Byrd Brothers (1968).[92]

The Eagle’s song about the demise and decadence Hollywood show business went triple-platinum in the US alone, as well as selling well around the world. The success of the single helped its album Hotel California lift over 16 million copies. Needless to say, it has also become one of classic rock’s most memorable songs.

The term “retro-metal” has been used to describe bands such as Texas-based The Sword, California’s High on Fire, Sweden’s Witchcraft,[285] and Australia’s Wolfmother.[285][286] The Sword’s Age of Winters (2006) drew heavily on the work of Black Sabbath and Pentagram,[287] Witchcraft added elements of folk rock and psychedelic rock,[288] and Wolfmother’s self-titled 2005 debut album had “Deep Purple-ish organs” and “Jimmy Page-worthy chordal riffing”. Mastodon, which plays in a progressive/sludge style, has inspired claims of a metal revival in the United States, dubbed by some critics the “New Wave of American Heavy Metal”.[289]

Led Zeppelin defined central aspects of the emerging genre, with Page’s highly distorted guitar style and singer Robert Plant’s dramatic, wailing vocals.[155] Other bands, with a more consistently heavy, “purely” metal sound, would prove equally important in codifying the genre. The 1970 releases by Black Sabbath (Black Sabbath and Paranoid) and Deep Purple (In Rock) were crucial in this regard.[115]

Earlier on, as “heavy metal” emerged partially from the heavy psychedelic rock or acid rock scene, “acid rock” was often used interchangeably with “heavy metal” and “hard rock”. Musicologist Steve Waksman stated that “the distinction between acid rock, hard rock, and heavy metal can at some point never be more than tenuous”,[106] while percussionist John Beck defined “acid rock” as synonymous with hard rock and heavy metal.[107]

Attendees of metal concerts do not dance in the usual sense. It has been argued that this is due to the music’s largely male audience and “extreme heterosexualist ideology”. Two primary body movements used are headbanging and an arm thrust that is both a sign of appreciation and a rhythmic gesture.[77] The performance of air guitar is popular among metal fans both at concerts and listening to records at home.[78] According to Deena Weinstein, thrash metal concerts have two elements that are not part of the other metal genres: moshing and stage diving, which “were imported from the punk/hardcore subculture”.[79] Weinstein states that moshing participants bump and jostle each other as they move in a circle in an area called the “pit” near the stage. Stage divers climb onto the stage with the band and then jump “back into the audience”.[79]
