Traditional power metal bands like Sweden’s HammerFall, England’s DragonForce, and Florida’s Iced Earth have a sound clearly indebted to the classic NWOBHM style. Many power metal bands such as Florida’s Kamelot, Finnish groups Nightwish, Stratovarius and Sonata Arctica, Italy’s Rhapsody of Fire, and Russia’s Catharsis feature a keyboard-based “symphonic” sound, sometimes employing orchestras and opera singers. Power metal has built a strong fanbase in Japan and South America, where bands like Brazil’s Angra and Argentina’s Rata Blanca are popular.
The Joe Friday Band is one entertaining Utah band that specializes in classic hits and top 40 favorites. They will add fun to any event by playing tunes from the Beatles, Elvis, Blink 182, Cheap Trick, Green Day, Jimmy Eat World, Queen, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Led Zeppelin, Chuck Berry, the Doors, Cream, Rolling Stones, the Monkees, Van Halen, and many others.
A pure classic in rock history, starts off in classic AC/DC fashion continues with timeless hard rock vocals, and that classic guitar riff that people who don’t even though what this song is knows, this is definitely a top ten pick for rock songs, without a doubt (although stairway is definitely better than this). Great contender for top three I feel, although all of these songs are great.
Best band Ever. Some of the other bands are okay. Some I’ve never heard of. Their music creates the most unique and amazing sound ever that no band could ever recreated. First 2 seconds I hear them, I know for a fact its them. I could literally listen to their music all day everyday without ever getting sick of it. That’s when you know a band is good. When you don’t get tired of hearing them. Sib Hashian, greatest afro in history. Rest in peace Brad Delp. Any true Boston fan will remember you forever.
The following is a list of notable soft rock bands and artists and their most notable soft rock songs. This list should not include artists whose main style of music is anything other than soft rock, even if they have released one or more songs that fall under the “soft rock” genre. The “Classic Alternative” concept floats to the service every few years or so. As Derdeyn points out in his story, many Alternative bands from the ’80s (actually, they were more often referred to as “Modern Rock” back then) are still popular concert bands today – especially at the myriad summer festivals scheduled throughout North America.
Pink Floyd is a classic example of a band that made the astounding transformation from cult rock darlings to a world-famous rock act. Before achieving legendary rock status, Pink Floyd was founded by the offbeat genius Syd Barrett, primarily as a vehicle for his tripped-out inclinations that extended beyond music.
As a specialty show, Classic Alternative has been a good Sunday morning compliment for quite a few existing Alternative stations. In some markets, I wonder if a Classic Alternative WEEKEND show might also work in a Classic Rock, Classic Hits or even an AC format (if you stick to the bigger MTV hits)?
Mel, it’s all about what you were listening to back in high school or in your dorm room. If the music became part of the soundtrack of your life, you never let it go. For much of that Classic Alternative, exposure was spotty, situational, and market by market. Good to hear from you.
10 Motley Crue Mötley Crüe was an American metal band formed in Los Angeles, California on January 17, 1981. The group was founded by bassist Nikki Sixx and drummer Tommy Lee, lead vocalist Vince Neil and lead guitarist Mick Mars.
You take Geddy Lee, Easily the best Bassist in the world, mix complex drumming from Neil Peart, put in Alex Lifeson’s stellar guitar work, add in some odd time signatures, complex themes, spectacular synthesizers and you got Rush’s Tom Sawyer.

The Beatles changed the whole landscape of pop and rock as we know it during their short but monumentally remarkable era. Each one of their albums — from their first LP Please Please Me in 1963 to their last album Let It Be in 1970 — is considered a classic. Every Beatles fan knows that. And even if you’re not much of a fan, you otherwise recognize their enduring influence that extends beyond music, even several decades past their prime.
If you look at a list of songs that specifically define each rock band, most like Queen, Rush, Pearl Jam, U2 or Nirvana have roughly ten notable songs that fans or non fans recognize. Beyond those ten songs the list drops off considerably.
Perhaps the first great acid rock tune, “Purple Haze” was written by guitar god Jimi Hendrix and performed by the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Hendrix, a blues and R&B guitarist by trade, quickly learned to play psychedelic blues, essentially inventing the style as he produced the album, Are You Experienced, on which “Purple Haze” appears. The words for the song, seemingly about a man tripping on acid, are simply about a young man going crazy for this foxy lady. No drugs required for that, right?
3 Queen Queen are an English rock band formed in 1970. Members were Freddie Mercury (Vocals and Piano), Brian May (Guitar, Vocals), Roger Taylor (Drums, Vocals), and John Deacon (Bass Guitar, Vocals). Don Henley of the Eagles wanted to write a song about life in Los Angeles, California, particularly its emphasis on fame, hedonism and money. Henley wrote, “It’s basically a song about the dark underbelly of the American dream and about excess in America, which is something we knew a lot about.” Henley wanted the song, decidedly somber, and played in harmonic minor, seem like an episode of the Twilight Zone, which it certainly does. Apparently the song worked on many levels, because it won the Grammy Award for Record of the Year in 1978. And the dueling guitars coda was rated the greatest guitar solo by Guitarist magazine in 1998.
lyrics and music by Warren Zevon You’re supposed to sit on your ass and nod at stupid things Man, that’s hard to do And if you don’t, they’ll screw you And if you do, they’ll screw you, too And I’m standing in the middle of the diamond all alone I always play to win When it comes to skin and bone And sometimes I say things I shouldn’t Like….
I get it they are not everyone’s cup of tea and people get tired of hearing their names mentioned. But when people mention old music and everyone thinks of The Beatles, doesn’t that say something? Let’s give John, Paul, George and Ringo some credit.
For the 91st issue (in April 2006), the magazine presented ‘The 100 Greatest British Rock Albums Ever’, which were voted for by Classic Rock staff and various people associated with rock music (including Glenn Hughes of Deep Purple and Black Sabbath fame, Lemmy of Motörhead and Francis Rossi of Status Quo). The magazine decided to let AC/DC be classed as a British act, although the band was formed in Australia. All of the band’s singers (Dave Evans, Bon Scott and Brian Johnson) and guitarists Angus and Malcolm Young are of UK descent. Led Zeppelin’s Led Zeppelin IV reached first place.

Recently signed to Spinefarm/Universal, these British hard rockers release their debut album, Ain’t Always Easy, on March 2. Purveyors of the kind of riffy hard rock that worked so well for the likes of Black Stone Cherry, Stone Broken just might be one of the current crop of homegrown talent that make major progress in the coming year.

By the middle of the 70s — when guitarists Don Felder and Joe Walsh joined the lineup — the Eagles became one of the biggest bands on the planet. In 1977, their album Hotel California went to #1 on the US Billboard 200 and in many parts of the world, selling over 16 million copies in the US alone. In the early 1980s the Eagles split due to animosity among the band members, but in 1994 they reunited and since then they’ve been busy with a series of tours and records up to the current time.
Like many other rock bands, Aerosmith experienced a lull in their career due to the band member’s drug addiction problems. However, they managed to bounce back in the 1980s and even enjoyed a more successful renaissance in their career with their albums Pump (1989), Get a Grip (1993) and Nine Lives (1997), all of which went multi-platinum and further sealed their legendary status.
