In live performance, loudness—an “onslaught of sound”, in sociologist Deena Weinstein’s description—is considered vital.[10] In his book Metalheads, psychologist Jeffrey Arnett refers to heavy metal concerts as “the sensory equivalent of war”.[28] Following the lead set by Jimi Hendrix, Cream and The Who, early heavy metal acts such as Blue Cheer set new benchmarks for volume. As Blue Cheer’s Dick Peterson put it, “All we knew was we wanted more power.”[29] A 1977 review of a Motörhead concert noted how “excessive volume in particular figured into the band’s impact.”[30] Weinstein makes the case that in the same way that melody is the main element of pop and rhythm is the main focus of house music, powerful sound, timbre, and volume are the key elements of metal. She argues that the loudness is designed to “sweep the listener into the sound” and to provide a “shot of youthful vitality”.[10]

Attendees of metal concerts do not dance in the usual sense. It has been argued that this is due to the music’s largely male audience and “extreme heterosexualist ideology”. Two primary body movements used are headbanging and an arm thrust that is both a sign of appreciation and a rhythmic gesture.[77] The performance of air guitar is popular among metal fans both at concerts and listening to records at home.[78] According to Deena Weinstein, thrash metal concerts have two elements that are not part of the other metal genres: moshing and stage diving, which “were imported from the punk/hardcore subculture”.[79] Weinstein states that moshing participants bump and jostle each other as they move in a circle in an area called the “pit” near the stage. Stage divers climb onto the stage with the band and then jump “back into the audience”.[79]

Give me a break. Why is The Who anywhere close to Rush? Same with Heart, Journey, and the Beatles, I just don’t understand how any band especially the ones I’ve listed, could top off Rush. The only band that comes anywhere close to Rush is Van Halen, but they’re half as good at best. Rush has by far the most variety, The most music, and I honestly haven’t heard a rush song that I don’t like. RUSH FOR LIFE!

Mel, it’s all about what you were listening to back in high school or in your dorm room. If the music became part of the soundtrack of your life, you never let it go. For much of that Classic Alternative, exposure was spotty, situational, and market by market. Good to hear from you.

I don’t like giving most of my business to one company. That used to be called a monopoly, which I have detested for 40 years or more. However, Amazon had been the one place I can count on having what I want, delivering it in a timely manner, and having pretty good customer service. (it could be a bit better…heck I used to teach customer service). So, you won me over years ago. Adding the music option helps cement the relationship.

“Johnny B. Goode” is a song about a country boy who makes it big by playing rock and roll; of course, that boy was Chuck Berry himself, whose guitar work on this twangy tune comprises rock guitar 101. Just about every guitarist in the business has studied Berry’s riffs in this quintessential rock classic. Incidentally, “Johnny B. Goode” hit #8 on the Billboard Hot 100, and Rolling Stone magazine named it #7 on its list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. Not bad for a song that has been called “the first rock star origin story.”

Nice So….. I see a lot of people saying that these tracks are only “free” for 30th days, that is not the case. What the “free for 30th days” are referring to is the Google Play service which, just like Pandora, you can pay a monthly rate to have the premium version of it. Oh well….. Not like I’m the first-person here to point this out…. Smh. But I feel it’s a good deal! Free music is ALWAYS good!

Iron Butterfly’s debut album, released in early 1968, was titled Heavy. The first use of “heavy metal” in a song lyric is in reference to a motorcycle in the Steppenwolf song “Born to Be Wild”, also released that year:[94] “I like smoke and lightning/Heavy metal thunder/Racin’ with the wind/And the feelin’ that I’m under.”

In 1990, a review in Rolling Stone suggested retiring the term “heavy metal” as the genre was “ridiculously vague”.[201] The article stated that the term only fueled “misperceptions of rock & roll bigots who still assume that five bands as different as Ratt, Extreme, Anthrax, Danzig and Mother Love Bone” sound the same.[201]

LA would be one of those fascinating markets. My recollection is that it was attempted in San Diego at one point, but probably too early to be effective. Again, KM, it’s a selective thing, but very likely not a national success.

Earlier in the week, musicologist, radio pro, and mega-blogger Alan Cross posed today’s post title as a question in his highly entertaining blog, “A Journal of Musical Things.”  Quoting a story in the Vancouver Province by Stuart Derdeyn, the burning issue on the table is whether “Classic Alternative” is poised to be the next incarnation of Classic Rock.

    Motörhead, founded in 1975, was the first important band to straddle the punk/metal divide. With the explosion of punk in 1977, others followed. British music papers such as the NME and Sounds took notice, with Sounds writer Geoff Barton christening the movement the “New Wave of British Heavy Metal”.[180] NWOBHM bands including Iron Maiden, Saxon, and Def Leppard re-energized the heavy metal genre. Following the lead set by Judas Priest and Motörhead, they toughened up the sound, reduced its blues elements, and emphasized increasingly fast tempos.[181]
