Punk rock emerged in the mid-1970s as a reaction against contemporary social conditions as well as what was perceived as the overindulgent, overproduced rock music of the time, including heavy metal. Sales of heavy metal records declined sharply in the late 1970s in the face of punk, disco, and more mainstream rock.[177] With the major labels fixated on punk, many newer British heavy metal bands were inspired by the movement’s aggressive, high-energy sound and “lo-fi”, do it yourself ethos. Underground metal bands began putting out cheaply recorded releases independently to small, devoted audiences.[179]

During the 1980s, glam metal became popular with groups such as Mötley Crüe and Poison. Underground scenes produced an array of more aggressive styles: thrash metal broke into the mainstream with bands such as Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, and Anthrax, while other extreme subgenres of metal such as death metal and black metal remain subcultural phenomena. Since the mid-1990s popular styles have further expanded the definition of the genre. These include groove metal (with bands such as Pantera, Sepultura, and Lamb of God) and nu metal (with bands such as Korn, Slipknot, and Linkin Park), the latter of which often incorporates elements of grunge and hip hop.

I have seen them forgotten for the most part in the new generation. They are a great band to listen to because they can rock hard like led zepplin or play soft relaxing songs like pink floyd based on which of they’r 3 singers is singing. They are a top 25 band and hope they won’t be forgotten in this generation

One of the great bands playing classic hits from the 1980s is the Power 80s Band, known for their unique costumes, superior sound, and lively personalities. For crowds that dig music from the 80s, this band is out-of-this-world good.

Don Henley of the Eagles wanted to write a song about life in Los Angeles, California, particularly its emphasis on fame, hedonism and money. Henley wrote, “It’s basically a song about the dark underbelly of the American dream and about excess in America, which is something we knew a lot about.” Henley wanted the song, decidedly somber, and played in harmonic minor, seem like an episode of the Twilight Zone, which it certainly does. Apparently the song worked on many levels, because it won the Grammy Award for Record of the Year in 1978. And the dueling guitars coda was rated the greatest guitar solo by Guitarist magazine in 1998.

The tritone, an interval spanning three whole tones—such as C to F#—was a forbidden dissonance in medieval ecclesiastical singing, which led monks to call it diabolus in musica—”the devil in music”.[46]

The band’s debut LP The Piper at the Gates of Dawn exhibited Barrett’s extraordinary, psychedelic musical flair. Unfortunately, Barrett’s mental health worsened due to drugs which rendered him ineffectual. He eventually left the band in 1968. After his departure Pink Floyd changed gears, creating the idea of concepts for their albums such as Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall which made them one of the biggest rock bands in the world.

The guy that left the other comment on here is a complete moron! He rips AC/DC who are rock icons and puts a crappy grunge band(Nirvana), a way overrated band(Aerosmith & Pink Floyd) and a no talent band (RHCP) in his top 10? Outside of Led Zeppelin, Guns-n-Roses, & Metallica your list sucks dude! And Rush? They may be good musicians, but their music sucks! They’re the same as Primus, good musicians, crappy music!

When Aerosmith was on the threshold of their career during the 1970s, people started comparing them to Rolling Stones. Despite the blues-rock influence similar to The Stones (not to mention front man Steven Tyler’s resemblance to Mick Jagger), the comparison wasn’t really fair to either band. The naysayers seemed to stop when Aerosmith came out with their third LP Toys in the Attic in 1975 that helped them to make their unique mark in the rock music field.

Freddie Mercury- Iconic vocals, flamboyant stage persona, lively personality. Brian May- Underrated guitarist, beautiful voice, very wise. Roger Taylor- Amazing drummer, extraordinary falsettos, very humorous. John Deacon- Incredible bass lines, underrated songwriter, is the glue that holds everyone together. Do the math and combine it all together… what do you get- BAM! One of the greatest classic rock bands of all time. There music has and always will pass the test of time. To those who say Queen is overrated, please go kiss a goose. I would say is a bit underrated, seeing people humming “We Are The Champions,” clapping along to “We Will Rock You,” heck, even trying to recreate iconic bass lines from “Another One Bites The Dust,” gives me joy. But that joy compresses into dust when they say they have no idea who Queen is. Queen covers nearly all genres. Funk, rockabilly, gospel, HECK, FREDDIE MERCURY SANG OPERA. Queen is the best and will stay that way.

Is love suppose to be based on what you want in the relationship or what they want in the relationship? What about reciprocation? Released in 1977, this soft rock ballad shows a different side of Cooper that we have never seen before.

The Beatles changed the whole landscape of pop and rock as we know it during their short but monumentally remarkable era. Each one of their albums — from their first LP Please Please Me in 1963 to their last album Let It Be in 1970 — is considered a classic. Every Beatles fan knows that. And even if you’re not much of a fan, you otherwise recognize their enduring influence that extends beyond music, even several decades past their prime.

Earlier on, as “heavy metal” emerged partially from the heavy psychedelic rock or acid rock scene, “acid rock” was often used interchangeably with “heavy metal” and “hard rock”. Musicologist Steve Waksman stated that “the distinction between acid rock, hard rock, and heavy metal can at some point never be more than tenuous”,[106] while percussionist John Beck defined “acid rock” as synonymous with hard rock and heavy metal.[107]

Classic Rock was owned by British bands and a band doesn’t get more British than The Who. With amazing songs such as ‘Pinball Wizard’, ‘My Generation’ and ‘Baba O’Riley’ The Who are one of the best in the genre. Due to death in the band they didn’t make they greatest impact but showing that they can still rock they are still amazing now as they were in the 70s and 80s.

In 1990, a review in Rolling Stone suggested retiring the term “heavy metal” as the genre was “ridiculously vague”.[201] The article stated that the term only fueled “misperceptions of rock & roll bigots who still assume that five bands as different as Ratt, Extreme, Anthrax, Danzig and Mother Love Bone” sound the same.[201]
