Boston I think in my opinion is a great classic rock band because Boston isn’t too hard rock but just enough classic rock and rock and roll to create the perfect combo. Plus their first and second album were definitely the best. After that it was ok, with the exception of Amanda, that was a great song!

Because it has a meaning in the song. It’s lyrics are a story. And the guitar sounds are one of a kind, and are very easy to rock out to the beat and rhythmic sounds. It’s a classic example of rock music.

Nice So….. I see a lot of people saying that these tracks are only “free” for 30th days, that is not the case. What the “free for 30th days” are referring to is the Google Play service which, just like Pandora, you can pay a monthly rate to have the premium version of it. Oh well….. Not like I’m the first-person here to point this out…. Smh. But I feel it’s a good deal! Free music is ALWAYS good!

When you think rock anthem, the first notes in Smoke On The Water are the ones who come to the mind of 90% of the population. You really have to think hard to come up with anything else. The beginning hit of Jealous Lover by Rainbow is a close second… You can’t even describe it.. Blackmore is king.

Between 1983 and 1984, heavy metal went from an 8 percent to a 20 percent share of all recordings sold in the U.S.[192] Several major professional magazines devoted to the genre were launched, including Kerrang! (in 1981) and Metal Hammer (in 1984), as well as a host of fan journals. In 1985, Billboard declared, “Metal has broadened its audience base. Metal music is no longer the exclusive domain of male teenagers. The metal audience has become older (college-aged), younger (pre-teen), and more female”.[193]

Included in Pink Floyd’s rock opera, The Wall, “Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2)” spawned a single that became Pink Floyd’s only number one hit in the US, UK and other countries. Subtitled “Education,” it’s a protest song about the strict schooling in the UK, particularly as it relates to that in boarding schools. Part 2, written by bassist Roger Waters, as well as all the other “parts” of the song, contains a school choir, a searing and poignant guitar solo by David Gilmour and a disco drum beat, of all things. Members of Pink Floyd resisted making this a single, but we’ll all lucky they changed their minds.

They broke new records in record sales as well as in concert tours. The band is also legendary when it comes to indulgence in their lifestyle. However, every rock fan knows that behind the personal excess, Led Zeppelin was earnest in their own craft and pushed themselves to the limit musically. From the blues rock of their eponymous debut album in 1969 to the seamless energy of Led Zeppelin IV in 1971 to the mind-blowing double-album Physical Graffiti in 1975, it seems that Led Zeppelin knew that their records would stand the test time. Their golden era ended when drummer Bonham died in 1980 due to excessive alcohol consumption, but their legend lives on.

Hi all, Memphis Rain’s gig at the Liberty had a great crowd and we were joined on stage by some of our musician friends on a few songs. John Gregus thumped on the drums, Tom “Bump” McCarthy blew some blue harp while Matt Cere sang a number of rockers. Our next gig at this time is at Frenchy’s in Roselle Park Friday, June 2nd.

LA would be one of those fascinating markets. My recollection is that it was attempted in San Diego at one point, but probably too early to be effective. Again, KM, it’s a selective thing, but very likely not a national success.

This is another song with a true story behind it. The name Layla relates to a book entitled The Story of Layla and Majnun, which tells the tale of Majnun, who falls in love with a beautiful young woman; but her father rejects Majnun and he goes crazy with desire. In real life, guitarist Eric Clapton, the co-writer of “Layla,” fell in love with Patty Boyd, who had married George Harrison. Eventually, though, Boyd and Harrison got a divorce and Clapton then married Boyd. How sweet! Anyway, over the years “Layla” has garnered great popular and critical acclaim. Interestingly, Both Clapton and Duane Allman of the Allman Brothers wrote and played the famous guitar licks throughout the song.

Black country bluesmen made raw, heavily amplified boogie records of their own, especially in Memphis, where guitarists like Joe Hill Louis, Willie Johnson (with the early Howlin’ Wolf band) and Pat Hare (with Little Junior Parker) played driving rhythms and scorching, distorted solos that might be counted the distant ancestors of heavy metal.

In the mid- and late 1990s came a new wave of U.S. metal groups inspired by the alternative metal bands and their mix of genres.[259] Dubbed “nu metal”, bands such as Slipknot, Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, Papa Roach, P.O.D., Korn and Disturbed incorporated elements ranging from death metal to hip hop, often including DJs and rap-style vocals. The mix demonstrated that “pancultural metal could pay off”.[260] Nu metal gained mainstream success through heavy MTV rotation and Ozzy Osbourne’s 1996 introduction of Ozzfest, which led the media to talk of a resurgence of heavy metal.[261] In 1999, Billboard noted that there were more than 500 specialty metal radio shows in the United States, nearly three times as many as ten years before.[262] While nu metal was widely popular, traditional metal fans did not fully embrace the style.[263] By early 2003, the movement’s popularity was on the wane, though several nu metal acts such as Korn or Limp Bizkit retained substantial followings.[264]

The Doors should definitely be higher on this list. Morrison gets all the hype, but Ray Manzarek is one of the greatest musicians to play rock and roll to this date. Just listen to there last song ever recorded (Riders on the Storm) and tell me they should still be #12.

^ The first explicit prohibition of that interval seems to occur with the “development of Guido of Arezzo’s hexachordal system which made B flat a diatonic note, namely as the 4th degree of the hexachordal on F. From then until the end of Renaissance the tritone, nicknamed the ‘diabolus in musica’, was regarded as an unstable interval and rejected as a consonance” (Sadie, Stanley [1980]. “Tritone”, in The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, 1st ed. MacMillan, pp. 154–155. ISBN 0-333-23111-2. See also Arnold, Denis [1983]. “Tritone”, in The New Oxford Companion to Music, Volume 1: A–J. Oxford University Press. ISBN 0-19-311316-3). During the Romantic era and in modern classical music composers have used it freely, exploiting the evil connotations with which it is culturally associated.

  1. Many metal musicians when performing live engage in headbanging, which involves rhythmically beating time with the head, often emphasized by long hair. The il cornuto, or devil horns, hand gesture was popularized by vocalist Ronnie James Dio while with Black Sabbath and Dio.[44] Although Gene Simmons of Kiss claims to have been the first to make the gesture on the 1977 Love Gun album cover, there is speculation as to who started the phenomenon.[76]
