Traditional power metal bands like Sweden’s HammerFall, England’s DragonForce, and Florida’s Iced Earth have a sound clearly indebted to the classic NWOBHM style. Many power metal bands such as Florida’s Kamelot, Finnish groups Nightwish, Stratovarius and Sonata Arctica, Italy’s Rhapsody of Fire, and Russia’s Catharsis feature a keyboard-based “symphonic” sound, sometimes employing orchestras and opera singers. Power metal has built a strong fanbase in Japan and South America, where bands like Brazil’s Angra and Argentina’s Rata Blanca are popular.
You take Geddy Lee, Easily the best Bassist in the world, mix complex drumming from Neil Peart, put in Alex Lifeson’s stellar guitar work, add in some odd time signatures, complex themes, spectacular synthesizers and you got Rush’s Tom Sawyer.
In the United States, sludge metal, mixing doom and hardcore, emerged in the late 1980s—Eyehategod and Crowbar were leaders in a major Louisiana sludge scene. Early in the next decade, California’s Kyuss and Sleep, inspired by the earlier doom metal bands, spearheaded the rise of stoner metal, while Seattle’s Earth helped develop the drone metal subgenre. The late 1990s saw new bands form such as the Los Angeles–based Goatsnake, with a classic stoner/doom sound, and Sunn O))), which crosses lines between doom, drone, and dark ambient metal—the New York Times has compared their sound to an “Indian raga in the middle of an earthquake”.
Freddie Mercury- Iconic vocals, flamboyant stage persona, lively personality. Brian May- Underrated guitarist, beautiful voice, very wise. Roger Taylor- Amazing drummer, extraordinary falsettos, very humorous. John Deacon- Incredible bass lines, underrated songwriter, is the glue that holds everyone together. Do the math and combine it all together… what do you get- BAM! One of the greatest classic rock bands of all time. There music has and always will pass the test of time. To those who say Queen is overrated, please go kiss a goose. I would say Queen is a bit underrated, seeing people humming “We Are The Champions,” clapping along to “We Will Rock You,” heck, even trying to recreate iconic bass lines from “Another One Bites The Dust,” gives me joy. But that joy compresses into dust when they say they have no idea who Queen is. Queen covers nearly all genres. Funk, rockabilly, gospel, HECK, FREDDIE MERCURY SANG OPERA. Queen is the best and will stay that way.

This song is far better than Bohemian Rhapsody. to be honest Bohemian Rhapsody is far overrated as is Queen. The band would have been far less successful if they weren’t carried by Freddie Mercury. This song mesmerizing and the guitar solo is incredible. This should be a FAR second to Stairway to Heaven.
The Beatles are THE best band in history. Rock and roll was slowly disappearing, but then The Beatles started. These guys just about saved rock and roll. If you like The Rolling Stones, then you’ve got to like The Beatles. I mean, The Beatles and The Stones were friends, and The Beatles gave The Stones their first single. Every song by The Beatles is excellent (even Revolution 9 and Everybody’s Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Monkey). The Beatles had enough songs to keep them rolling ’till TODAY. I mean, just imagine if Imagine, Live And Let Die, and My Sweet Lord were Beatles songs. These are some of the biggest songs in history, and they would have been Beatles songs had The Beatles not split up. It’s obvious: THE Beatles SHOULD HAVE BEEN #1 ON THIS LIST. THEY ARE THE BEST BAND IN HISTORY. PERIOD.

While the Rolling Stones embarked on a 50th anniversary tour last year, and Bob Seger is still riding out his fame as he approaches 70, some of classic rock music’s biggest stars bowed out well before their time. Here are five classic rock artists we haven’t heard from in a while, and wish would make a comeback.
I love the topic Fred! Lately, I’ve been enjoying the stream of 103.1 The Wave out of Salt Lake City, UT (http://www.1031thewave.com). In my opinion, the station has a very good Classic Alternative music mix, with a balance of big Modern Rock hits and a sprinkling of REALLY lost tracks, and it’s hosted with air talent. I would love to see more stations attempt the idea, but as you and others stated above, there are probably very few major markets where it might work.
Seriously? Forty-seven? Why is this song at 47? This song belongs in the top 10. Amazing vocals, an unforgettable chorus, a memorable guitar solo, terrific all-around performance, and everything else required for a song for the ages. Why this song clocks in at 47 simply defies belief.

Well, when we did the first “all 80’s” station in Columbus in 1998, I found that the rock product drove the bus. Alternative was a bit weaker and tested so at the time. But, we were a bit early in the curve (as today’s radio now shows), and my 20 something nephew talks a lot about 90’s alternative and grunge. So…my answer is a qualified maybe. It’s not always bad to be ahead of the curve. Sometimes, you’re just not in the right place at the right time.
As described above, there are arguments about whether these and other early bands truly qualify as “heavy metal” or simply as “hard rock”. Those closer to the music’s blues roots or placing greater emphasis on melody are now commonly ascribed the latter label. AC/DC, which debuted with High Voltage in 1975, is a prime example. The 1983 Rolling Stone encyclopedia entry begins, “Australian heavy-metal band AC/DC”. Rock historian Clinton Walker writes, “Calling AC/DC a heavy metal band in the seventies was as inaccurate as it is today…. [They] were a rock ‘n’ roll band that just happened to be heavy enough for metal”. The issue is not only one of shifting definitions, but also a persistent distinction between musical style and audience identification: Ian Christe describes how the band “became the stepping-stone that led huge numbers of hard rock fans into heavy metal perdition”.
Robert Walser stated that, alongside blues and R&B, the “assemblage of disparate musical styles known … as ‘classical music'” has been a major influence on heavy metal since the genre’s earliest days. Also that metal’s “most influential musicians have been guitar players who have also studied classical music. Their appropriation and adaptation of classical models sparked the development of a new kind of guitar virtuosity [and] changes in the harmonic and melodic language of heavy metal.”
The mindset underlying classic rock was regarded by Christgau as politically regressive; he said the music eschewed ironic sensibilities in favor of unintellectual, conventional aesthetics rooted in Victorian era Romanticism, while downplaying the more radical aspects of 1960s counterculture, such as race, African-American music, politics, and pop in the art sense. “Though classic rock draws its inspiration and most of its heroes from the ’60s, it is, of course, a construction of the ’70s”, he wrote in 1991 for Details magazine. “It was invented by prepunk/predisco radio programmers who knew that before they could totally commodify ’60s culture they’d have to rework it—that is, selectively distort it till it threatened no one … In the official rock pantheon the Doors and Led Zeppelin are Great Artists while Chuck Berry and Little Richard are Primitive Forefathers and James Brown and Sly Stone are Something Else.” Regarding the development of classic rock, Christgau points to the compromised socioeconomic security and diminishing collective consciousness of a new generation of listeners in the 1970s and on, who succeeded rock’s early years during baby-boomer economic prosperity in the United States. “Not for nothing did classic rock crown the Doors’ mystagogic middlebrow escapism and Led Zep’s chest-thumping megalomaniac grandeur. Rhetorical self-aggrandizement that made no demands on everyday life was exactly what the times called for.” Shuker attributed the rise of classic-rock radio in part to “the consumer power of the aging post-war ‘baby boomers’ and the appeal of this group to radio advertisers”. In his opinion, classic rock also produced a rock music ideology and discussion of the music that was “heavily gendered”, celebrating “a male homosocial paradigm of musicianship” that “continued to dominate subsequent discourse, not just around rock music, but of popular music more generally.”
The 100th issue contained all the regular features, but only one article, in which 100 names in rock were asked to write a piece on their nomination for a “rock icon”. Contributors included Brian May, Lemmy (who nominated Tina Turner, and was then himself nominated by Ian Camfield), Ian Gillan, Gary Moore, Angus Young, Phil Collins, Sebastian Bach, Peter Frampton, Jerry Cantrell, Chris Cornell, Paul Rodgers, Chad Smith, Jack Black, Zakk Wylde and Matt Bellamy.
The Silvertones are four piece Blues band that also does classic rock songs from the 60s, 70s, and 80s. They were founded in 1993 by Brian Wicker and Kyle Copeland. Dubbed as an anthem for apathetic kids, “Smells Like Teen Spirit” is arguably Nirvana’s greatest hit and perhaps the greatest one of Grunge or alternative rock. It’s so popular, even now, that college marching bands sometimes play it. Moreover, the intro guitar lick, played with power chords, has become one of the most iconic riffs in rock and roll history. It seems every rock guitarist can play it to some degree. How about you? Anyway, the song blasted to #6 on Billboard’s Hot 100 in 1991 and 1992, shaking up the entire world of rock.
Classic rock was borne out of a radio format that used to be named as “album oriented rock,” also known as AOR. While classic rock leans more on the whole album, “oldies” on the other hand is primarily geared towards singles that became successful on the music charts. You could say that “classic rock” is also a marketing ploy to help “immortalize” sales as well as glowing perceptive memories of rock music from the late 1960s to early 1980s.

Released in 1987, this epic love ballad proves that classic rock is always going to be played because if you have never heard of this tune, you haven’t heard what love is all about.
One of the most influential bands in forging the merger of psychedelic rock and acid rock with the blues rock genre was the British power trio Cream, who derived a massive, heavy sound from unison riffing between guitarist Eric Clapton and bassist Jack Bruce, as well as Ginger Baker’s double bass drumming. Their first two LPs, Fresh Cream (1966) and Disraeli Gears (1967), are regarded as essential prototypes for the future style of heavy metal. The Jimi Hendrix Experience’s debut album, Are You Experienced (1967), was also highly influential. Hendrix’s virtuosic technique would be emulated by many metal guitarists and the album’s most successful single, “Purple Haze”, is identified by some as the first heavy metal hit. Vanilla Fudge, whose first album also came out in 1967, has been called “one of the few American links between psychedelia and what soon became heavy metal”, and the band has been cited as an early American heavy metal group. On their self-titled debut album, Vanilla Fudge created “loud, heavy, slowed-down arrangements” of contemporary hit songs, blowing these songs up to “epic proportions” and “bathing them in a trippy, distorted haze.”
