“greatest classic rock songs ever +classic rock bands that start with a”

When you think of love, you think of affection and devotion. You also think of inspiration. Released in 1984, this song tells a story that defines how important motivation is to any romance, especially love.

Earlier in the week, musicologist, radio pro, and mega-blogger Alan Cross posed today’s post title as a question in his highly entertaining blog, “A Journal of Musical Things.”  Quoting story in the Vancouver Province by Stuart Derdeyn, the burning issue on the table is whether “Classic Alternative” is poised to be the next incarnation of Classic Rock.

17 The Jimi Hendrix Experience The Jimi Hendrix Experience was an English-American rock band that formed in Westminster, London, in September 1966. During the late 1980s, the power metal scene came together largely in reaction to the harshness of death and black metal.[235] Though a relatively underground style in North America, it enjoys wide popularity in Europe, Japan, and South America. Power metal focuses on upbeat, epic melodies and themes that “appeal to the listener’s sense of valor and loveliness”.[236] The prototype for the sound was established in the mid-to-late 1980s by Germany’s Helloween, which combined the power riffs, melodic approach, and high-pitched, “clean” singing style of bands like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden with thrash’s speed and energy, “crystalliz[ing] the sonic ingredients of what is now known as power metal”.[237]

The high-powered Speed of Sound Band knows how to turn dull parties into exciting events. Crowds can’t sit still once Speed of Sound gets their mojo working.

Then we come to Freddie Mercury. A legend among legends. Freddie’s voice was so powerful and had a range that most singers only dream of acquiring. He is listed as one of the greatest frontman in history, which is no surprise to anyone who has seen it in person or on video. His death will be mourned for many more years.

Scott, thanks for the note. Specialty shows are a great way to pepper in material. And of course, any station that conducts music research can test these titles to ascertain their familiarity and popularity with their audiences. Appreciate the comment and thoughts.

Trouble? These are the kind of comments I hope we get. Wasn’t HD2 supposed to be the launching pad for dangerous, spontaneous niche radio? And I don’t care what you call them – it sure would be nice if people were buzzing about what they were listening to on the radio. Thanks for the comment, Walter.

^ Miller, Jim (1980). The Rolling Stone illustrated history of rock & roll. Rolling Stone. New York. ISBN 0-394-51322-3. Retrieved July 5, 2012. Black country bluesmen made raw, heavily amplified boogie records of their own, especially in Memphis, where guitarists like Joe Hill Louis, Willie Johnson (with the early Howlin’ Wolf band) and Pat Hare (with Little Junior Parker) played driving rhythms and scorching, distorted solos that might be counted the distant ancestors of heavy metal.

Dark Side of the Moon. The Wall. Wish You Were Here. Animals. Meddle. Pink Floyd was at the top of the pack thematically, musically, and lyrically. Their music is enjoyable to listen to and often requires many listens to discover it’s meaning. The Dark Side of the Moon is hailed as one of the greatest albums of all time and has themes of insanity, death, wasted time, and materialism. The Wall is very different than TDSoTM, but just as good, in it’s own way. It is a long album that follows a singer named Pink as he isolates himself and builds a metaphorical wall between himself andd the outside world. The rock opera also features the crowd favorites Comfortably Numb and Another Brick in the Wall pt. 2. Animals is only 5 tracks long but full of good music. It has roots in the book Animal Farm by George Orwell and it basically compares Brits to Dogs, Pigs, and Sheep. Wish You Were Here is essentially dedicated to Pink Floyd’s first lead singer Syd Barrett, who tragically went insane. The …more

Because it has a meaning in the song. It’s lyrics are a story. And the guitar sounds are one of a kind, and are very easy to rock out to the beat and rhythmic sounds. It’s a classic example of rock music.

They were a very talented band. However, they had the potential to be SO much more. Seriously, they only had six studio albums, and one of them was a cover album. Instead of producing albums once or twice a year, they just partied their minds out, and ended up having only a few great songs.

They have the best ock songs like, we will rock you, we are the champions, bohemia radspody and anothers great songs, and who will ever forget the legendary freedie mercury, brian may, roger taylor and john deacon.

During the mid-1980s, the classic rock format was mainly tailored to the adult male demographic ages 25–34, which remained its largest demographic through the mid-1990s.[15] As the format’s audience aged, its demographics skewed toward older age groups. By 2006, the 35–44 age group was the format’s largest audience[16] and by 2014 the 45–54 year-old demographic was the largest.[17]

Sure it may not be the best classic rock song but I’m voting for it because it’s the best Pink Floyd song. Pink Floyd is a great band and this song is their best. It’s the most popular song from the best selling album of all time! The reason why it’s such a great song is because the lyrics. The lyrics are the most beautiful thing you’ll ever hear. Forget that taylor swift bull! This is a well written song… The best written song of all time. Plus the instrumental in this song is amazing. I give Pink Floyd time to be at least top ten because Stairway to Heaven is a great song. Pink Floyd fan forever

Glam metal fell out of favor due not only to the success of grunge,[249] but also because of the growing popularity of the more aggressive sound typified by Metallica and the post-thrash groove metal of Pantera and White Zombie.[250] In 1991, the band Metallica released their album Metallica, also known as The Black Album, which moved the band’s sound out of the thrash metal genre and into standard heavy metal.[251] The album was certified 16× Platinum by the RIAA.[252] A few new, unambiguously metal bands had commercial success during the first half of the decade—Pantera’s Far Beyond Driven topped the Billboard chart in 1994—but, “In the dull eyes of the mainstream, metal was dead”.[253] Some bands tried to adapt to the new musical landscape. Metallica revamped its image: the band members cut their hair and, in 1996, headlined the alternative musical festival Lollapalooza founded by Jane’s Addiction singer Perry Farrell. While this prompted a backlash among some long-time fans,[254] Metallica remained one of the most successful bands in the world into the new century.[255]

Most songs on this list were singles but, at least at first, this one wasn’t. Hey, the Zep didn’t do singles! Yet Atlantic Records released it as a promotional single in 1972. Appearing on Led Zeppelin’s fourth album, “Stairway to Heaven” is a song in three parts, each one increasing in tempo and volume, until the thunderous crescendo, punctuated by guitarist Jimmy Page’s orgasmic trills, and then the tune slowly fades away with an acoustic coda. This breathtaking tune was picked as #3 on VH1’s 100 Greatest Rock Songs compiled in 2000. Incidentally, the rock band Spirit claimed it had created the song’s signature riff, but Spirit lost the copyright infringement lawsuit in 2017.

Heavy metal is usually based on riffs created with three main harmonic traits: modal scale progressions, tritone and chromatic progressions, and the use of pedal points. Traditional heavy metal tends to employ modal scales, in particular the Aeolian and Phrygian modes.[42] Harmonically speaking, this means the genre typically incorporates modal chord progressions such as the Aeolian progressions I-♭VI-♭VII, I-♭VII-(♭VI), or I-♭VI-IV-♭VII and Phrygian progressions implying the relation between I and ♭II (I-♭II-I, I-♭II-III, or I-♭II-VII for example). Tense-sounding chromatic or tritone relationships are used in a number of metal chord progressions.[43][44] In addition to using modal harmonic relationships, heavy metal also uses “pentatonic and blues-derived features”.[45]

Every month in Classic Rock our High Hopes feature focusses on new bands we believe have the capability of going on to achieve big and bold things. In the past, we’ve featured Black Stone Cherry, Rival Sons, Airbourne, Cadillac 3, Halestorm, Shinedown, Alter Bridge, Royal Blood and many more.

Yes is my all time favorite band-and I started listening to the Beatles in 1964, so I’ve heard most of the great groups. Yes is to me where progressive rock ended. There has not been anything better since Yes. Every time I play their music, it makes me so happy and joyous. If every one listened to them the world would be a much more happier and peaceful planet.

For a new nostalgia-based format to succeed on a sustained basis, it needs a strong base of existing fans that loved and adored the music in real-time – when it was first released.  That’s just not the case here.

The essence of metal drumming is creating a loud, constant beat for the band using the “trifecta of speed, power, and precision”.[25] Metal drumming “requires an exceptional amount of endurance”, and drummers have to develop “considerable speed, coordination, and dexterity … to play the intricate patterns” used in metal.[26] A characteristic metal drumming technique is the cymbal choke, which consists of striking a cymbal and then immediately silencing it by grabbing it with the other hand (or, in some cases, the same striking hand), producing a burst of sound. The metal drum setup is generally much larger than those employed in other forms of rock music.[21] Black metal, death metal and some “mainstream metal” bands “all depend upon double-kicks and blast beats”.[27]

By 1992, black metal scenes had begun to emerge in areas outside Scandinavia, including Germany, France, and Poland.[230] The 1993 murder of Mayhem’s Euronymous by Burzum’s Varg Vikernes provoked intensive media coverage.[227] Around 1996, when many in the scene felt the genre was stagnating,[231] several key bands, including Burzum and Finland’s Beherit, moved toward an ambient style, while symphonic black metal was explored by Sweden’s Tiamat and Switzerland’s Samael.[232] In the late 1990s and early 2000s decade, Norway’s Dimmu Borgir brought black metal closer to the mainstream,[233] as did Cradle of Filth.[234]
