The thematic content of heavy metal has long been a target of criticism. According to Jon Pareles, “Heavy metal’s main subject matter is simple and virtually universal. With grunts, moans and subliterary lyrics, it celebrates … a party without limits … [T]he bulk of the music is stylized and formulaic.”[7] Music critics have often deemed metal lyrics juvenile and banal, and others[57] have objected to what they see as advocacy of misogyny and the occult. During the 1980s, the Parents Music Resource Center petitioned the U.S. Congress to regulate the popular music industry due to what the group asserted were objectionable lyrics, particularly those in heavy metal songs.[58] Andrew Cope states that claims that heavy metal lyrics are misogynistic are “clearly misguided” as these critics have “overlook[ed] the overwhelming evidence that suggests otherwise”.[59] Music critic Robert Christgau called metal “an expressive mode [that] it sometimes seems will be with us for as long as ordinary white boys fear girls, pity themselves, and are permitted to rage against a world they’ll never beat”.[60]

Unfortunately, Barrett’s mental health worsened due to drugs which rendered him ineffectual. He eventually left the band in 1968. If people could have been up close and seen this song played live, they would easily vote this song #1. I have seen Jimmy l’ve do his solo and although iconic and legendary, it pales in comparison to Alan Collins and Gary Rossington’s live performance to Freebird’s guitar lead. What few people know is that they played those simultaneously and seamlessly giving the sound of what most people believe as one lead guitar playing. If you listen closely you can here two distinct guitars from the beginning and about midway through they split into their own tracks. Had I not witnessed this first hand standing less than 10 feet away with Ronnie Van Zant standing between them I would have continued to believe it was one guitar lead with another playing rhythm. It was an awesome concert back in 1975 Brussels, Belgium on their world tour.

Hi all, Memphis Rain’s gig at the Liberty had a great crowd and we were joined on stage by some of our musician friends on a few songs. Freddie Mercury- Iconic vocals, flamboyant stage persona, lively personality. Brian May- Underrated guitarist, beautiful voice, very wise. Roger Taylor- Amazing drummer, extraordinary falsettos, very humorous. John Deacon- Incredible bass lines, underrated songwriter, is the glue that holds everyone together. Do the math and combine it all together… what do you get- BAM! One of the greatest classic rock bands of all time. There music has and always will pass the test time. To those who say Queen is overrated, please go kiss a goose. I would say Queen is a bit underrated, seeing people humming “We Are The Champions,” clapping along to “We Will Rock You,” heck, even trying to recreate iconic bass lines from “Another One Bites The Dust,” gives me joy. But that joy compresses into dust when they say they have no idea who Queen is. Queen covers nearly all genres. Funk, rockabilly, gospel, HECK, FREDDIE MERCURY SANG OPERA. Queen is the best and will stay that way.

Metal historian Ian Christe describes what the components of the term mean in “hippiespeak”: “heavy” is roughly synonymous with “potent” or “profound,” and “metal” designates a certain type of mood, grinding and weighted as with metal.[93] The word “heavy” in this sense was a basic element of beatnik and later countercultural hippie slang, and references to “heavy music”—typically slower, more amplified variations of standard pop fare—were already common by the mid-1960s. Iron Butterfly’s debut album, released in early 1968, was titled Heavy. The first use of “heavy metal” in a song lyric is in reference to a motorcycle in the Steppenwolf song “Born to Be Wild”, also released that year:[94] “I like smoke and lightning/Heavy metal thunder/Racin’ with the wind/And the feelin’ that I’m under.”

If you’ve never heard of the band pictured at right*, 7 spins a week on a Classic Alternative station isn’t going to turn their music into high-testing big hits in 2017.  It’s hard to create a groundswell of support for poorly exposed music that’s now 30+ years old.

Just listen to Sharp dressed man, trust me it might even be the greatest Song ever put to paper, let alone the greatest rock song. Add to that Billy Gibbons was Jimi Hendrix’s favorite guitarist, his sound is utterly epic and his vocal range immense! Dusty Hill is a great bassist and Frank Beard’s drumwork is masterful. Add to that the sheer longevity and range of their music, they formed in 1969 and are still going! Every album is an evolution and a masterpiece! Enough said…

He rips AC/DC who are rock icons and puts a crappy grunge band(Nirvana), a way overrated band(Aerosmith & Pink Floyd) and a no talent band (RHCP) in his top 10? Outside of Led Zeppelin, Guns-n-Roses, & Metallica your list sucks dude! And Rush? They may be good musicians, but their music sucks! They’re the same as Primus, good musicians, crappy music!

Jefferson who? It’s been decades since Jefferson Airplane/Starship front woman Grace Slick has recorded an album, and for good reason. The “White Rabbit” rocker has gone on record as saying she was in the biz well past prime. “I left rock and roll professionally at about 49,” she told Vanity Fair in 2012. “That’s too long as far as I’m concerned.” Still, this rock goddess has been described as one of the best female vocalists of all time, so we’d love to hear just one more song. Slick is now a painter, so she’s knee deep in a whole other kind of hoopla.

The Eagle’s song about the demise and decadence Hollywood show business went triple-platinum in the US alone, as well as selling well around the world. The success of the single helped its album Hotel California lift over 16 million copies. Needless to say, it has also become one of classic rock’s most memorable songs.

When you think of love, you think of affection and devotion. You also think of inspiration. Released in 1984, this song tells a story that defines how important motivation is to any romance, especially love.

In January 1969, Led Zeppelin’s self-titled debut album was released and reached number 10 on the Billboard album chart. In July, Zeppelin and a power trio with a Cream-inspired, but cruder sound, Grand Funk Railroad, played the Atlanta Pop Festival. That same month, another Cream-rooted trio led by Leslie West released Mountain, an album filled with heavy blues rock guitar and roaring vocals. In August, the group—now itself dubbed Mountain—played an hour-long set at the Woodstock Festival, exposing the crowd of 300,000 people to the emerging sound of heavy metal.[148][149] Mountain’s proto-metal or early heavy metal hit song “Mississippi Queen” from the album Climbing! is especially credited with paving the way for heavy metal and was one of the first heavy guitar songs to receive regular play on radio.[148][150][151] In September 1969, the Beatles released the album Abbey Road containing the track “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)” which has been credited as an early example of or influence on heavy metal or doom metal.[152][153] In October 1969, British band High Tide debuted with the heavy, proto-metal album Sea Shanties.[154][139]

As described above, there are arguments about whether these and other early bands truly qualify as “heavy metal” or simply as “hard rock”. Those closer to the music’s blues roots or placing greater emphasis on melody are now commonly ascribed the latter label. AC/DC, which debuted with High Voltage in 1975, is a prime example. The 1983 Rolling Stone encyclopedia entry begins, “Australian heavy-metal band AC/DC”.[173] Rock historian Clinton Walker writes, “Calling AC/DC a heavy metal band in the seventies was as inaccurate as it is today…. [They] were a rock ‘n’ roll band that just happened to be heavy enough for metal”.[174] The issue is not only one of shifting definitions, but also a persistent distinction between musical style and audience identification: Ian Christe describes how the band “became the stepping-stone that led huge numbers of hard rock fans into heavy metal perdition”.[175]

Critics disagree over who can be thought of as the first heavy metal band. Most credit either Led Zeppelin or Black Sabbath, with American commentators tending to favour Led Zeppelin and British commentators tending to favour Black Sabbath, though many give equal credit to both. A few commentators—mainly American—argue for other groups including Iron Butterfly, Steppenwolf or Blue Cheer.[130] Deep Purple, the third band in what is sometimes considered the “unholy trinity” of heavy metal (Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, and Deep Purple), despite being slightly older than Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin, fluctuated between many rock styles until late 1969 when they took a heavy metal direction.[131]

Also in the 2010s, a metal style called “djent” developed as a spinoff of standard progressive metal.[292][293] Djent music uses rhythmic and technical complexity,[294] heavily distorted, palm-muted guitar chords, syncopated riffs[295] and polyrhythms alongside virtuoso soloing.[292] Another typical characteristic is the use of extended range seven, eight, and nine-string guitars.[296] Djent bands include Periphery, TesseracT[294][297][298] and Textures.[299]

The Beatles changed the whole landscape of pop and rock as we know it during their short but monumentally remarkable era. Each one of their albums — from their first LP Please Please Me in 1963 to their last album Let It Be in 1970 — is considered a classic. Every Beatles fan knows that. And even if you’re not much of a fan, you otherwise recognize their enduring influence that extends beyond music, even several decades past their prime.

In addition to The Kinks’ Dave Davies, other guitarists such as The Who’s Pete Townshend and The Yardbirds’ Jeff Beck were experimenting with feedback.[113][114] Where the blues rock drumming style started out largely as simple shuffle beats on small kits, drummers began using a more muscular, complex, and amplified approach to match and be heard against the increasingly loud guitar.[115] Vocalists similarly modified their technique and increased their reliance on amplification, often becoming more stylized and dramatic. In terms of sheer volume, especially in live performance, The Who’s “bigger-louder-wall-of-Marshalls” approach was seminal.[116]

The lead role of the guitar in heavy metal often collides with the traditional “frontman” or bandleader role of the vocalist, creating a musical tension as the two “contend for dominance” in a spirit of “affectionate rivalry”.[8] Heavy metal “demands the subordination of the voice” to the overall sound of the band. Reflecting metal’s roots in the 1960s counterculture, an “explicit display of emotion” is required from the vocals as a sign of authenticity.[19] Critic Simon Frith claims that the metal singer’s “tone of voice” is more important than the lyrics.[20]

On the other side of the Atlantic, the trend-setting group was Grand Funk Railroad, described as “the most commercially successful American heavy-metal band from 1970 until they disbanded in 1976, [they] established the Seventies success formula: continuous touring”.[169] Other influential bands identified with metal emerged in the U.S., such as Sir Lord Baltimore (Kingdom Come, 1970), Blue Öyster Cult (Blue Öyster Cult, 1972), Aerosmith (Aerosmith, 1973) and Kiss (Kiss, 1974). Sir Lord Baltimore’s 1970 debut album and both Humble Pie’s debut and self-titled third album were all among the first albums to be described in print as “heavy metal”, with As Safe As Yesterday Is being referred to by the term “heavy metal” in a 1970 review in Rolling Stone magazine.[170][171] Various smaller bands from the U.S., U.K, and Continental Europe, including Bang, Josefus, Leaf Hound, Primeval, Hard Stuff, Truth and Janey, Dust, JPT Scare Band, Frijid Pink, Cactus, May Blitz, Captain Beyond, Toad, Granicus, Iron Claw, and Yesterday’s Children, though lesser known outside of their respective scenes, proved to be greatly influential on the emerging metal movement. In Germany, Scorpions debuted with Lonesome Crow in 1972. Blackmore, who had emerged as a virtuoso soloist with Deep Purple’s highly influential album Machine Head (1972), left the band in 1975 to form Rainbow with Ronnie James Dio, singer and bassist for blues rock band Elf and future vocalist for Black Sabbath and heavy metal band Dio. Rainbow with Ronnie James Dio would expand on the mystical and fantasy-based lyrics and themes sometimes found in heavy metal, pioneering both power metal and metal.[172] These bands also built audiences via constant touring and increasingly elaborate stage shows.[115]

The First Things First Band is an excellent choice for dances, class reunions, clubs, private parties, and weddings. They play everyone’s favorite classic tunes along with a few current hits, disco, and funk.

The first wave of black metal emerged in Europe in the early and mid-1980s, led by Britain’s Venom, Denmark’s Mercyful Fate, Switzerland’s Hellhammer and Celtic Frost, and Sweden’s Bathory. By the late 1980s, Norwegian bands such as Mayhem and Burzum were heading a second wave.[224] Black metal varies considerably in style and production quality, although most bands emphasize shrieked and growled vocals, highly distorted guitars frequently played with rapid tremolo picking, a dark atmosphere[221] and intentionally lo-fi production, with ambient noise and background hiss.[225]

The classic rock format evolved from AOR radio stations that were attempting to appeal to an older audience by including familiar songs of the past with current hits.[5] In 1980, AOR radio station M105 in Cleveland began billing itself as “Cleveland’s Classic Rock,” playing a mix of rock music from the mid-1960s to the present.[6] Similarly, WMET called itself “Chicago’s Classic Rock” in 1981.[7] In 1982, radio consultant Lee Abrams developed the “Timeless Rock” format which combined contemporary AOR with rock hits from the 1960s and 1970s.[8]

Following drummer John Bonham’s death in 1980, the three surviving band members reunited a couple of times for special gigs, but lead singer Robert Plant has long slammed the idea of a reunion tour. In 2014, Plant told Rolling Stone he has no plans to follow the path of some of his classic rock peers who continue to deal with the stadium tour circus.

The following is a list of notable soft rock bands and artists and their most notable soft rock songs. This list should not include artists whose main style of music is anything other than soft rock, even if they have released one or more songs that fall under the “soft rock” genre. (Such songs can be added under Category:Soft rock songs.)

Producing music from the first minute, these guys took it to the limit! Made many legendary songs like Hotel California, Take It Easy, One Of These Nights etc. Etc. One of the best bands ever in rock, true legends!

So you’re right that there likely could not be a “national” Classic Alternative format. That’s probably why SiriusXM would tell you “1stWave” isn’t overly popular … the very nature of what constitutes a “hit” varies so much.

30 Collective Soul Collective Soul is an American rock band originally from Stockbridge, Georgia. Now based in Atlanta, the group consists of lead vocalist Ed Roland, rhythm guitarist Dean Roland, bassist Will Turpin, drummer Johnny Rabb and lead guitarist Jesse Triplett.

Personally, I’m a fan of a lot of this stuff, despite the fact it received consistently sporadic airplay in Detroit where I programmed.  Oddly enough, one of my favorite satellite music channels is “1st Wave,” which features a steady diet of bands like New Order, Depeche Mode, and others that Derdyn mentions in his column.  I would bet the folks at SiriusXM would tell us it’s not among the most popular of their themed music formats.

Fashion and personal style was especially important for glam metal bands of the era. Performers typically wore long, dyed, hairspray-teased hair (hence the nickname, “hair metal”); makeup such as lipstick and eyeliner; gaudy clothing, including leopard-skin-printed shirts or vests and tight denim, leather, or spandex pants; and accessories such as headbands and jewelry.[73] Pioneered by the heavy metal act X Japan in the late 1980s, bands in the Japanese movement known as visual kei—which includes many nonmetal groups—emphasize elaborate costumes, hair, and makeup.[75]

When we think of the classic rock genre, we think of the music persuasion from the late ’60s to the late ’80s and into the early ’90s. Although the genre is album oriented, classic rock has managed to produce some of the best songs the world has ever been introduced to, including some of the greatest love songs. A love song is magical, and the best ones contain epic story lines. When we hear a love song, we are reminded of what love actually is. What are your favorite classic rock love songs?

If someone is willing to save a soul, does that mean they love them? What if they have always loved them? Does that mean their love is real? Released in 1987, this epic love ballad proves that classic rock is always going to be played because if you have never heard of this tune, you haven’t heard what love is all about.

Sometimes the best songs have the simplest licks. Guitarist Keith Richards created the main guitar lick in “Satisfaction,” a three-note riff played with a Gibson fuzzbox, which made the guitar sound like a saxophone, with which Richards hoped to replace it at some point – but the producers said no way Jose. Anyway, the song was performed live for the first time on Shindig!, an American TV show on which everything was performed live. You gotta love it! Many Boomers probably remember watching this memorable show. Not surprisingly, Rolling Stone magazine picked “Satisfaction” #2 on its list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

Greatest song ever. Easily the best Beatles song, and if it’s the best song of the greatest and most inspirational band out there, then it’s got to top the chart. Even ROlling Stone magazine says it’s number one!

Matt Codina and the Glyders are studio quality musicians who know how to take ordinary parties and turn them into unforgettably-fun events. Crowds go gaga over their infectious music as they transform older rock tunes into danceable rockabilly classics. Invite Matt Codina and the Glyders to your next party and let the magic happen.

Is there a right way to show your love for someone? Released in 1990 and part of the current classic rock persuasion, this song delivers a reality that love is more than words, and that love is action. The song says you cay say ‘I Love You,’ but it is the action that shows the meaning of love.

Appearing on The Who’s spectacular album, Who’s Next, “Won’t Get Fooled Again,” was written by guitarist Pete Townshend, who said the song seeks to make a connection between music – highlighted by the use of a synthesizer throughout the song – and the teachings of Meher Baba and Inayat Khan. Thereafter, “Won’t Get Fooled Again” became a song The Who usually played at the end of their live performances, when Townshend destroyed his guitar and Keith Moon kicked over his drums, as the crowd squealed and hooted with delight.

Earlier on, as “heavy metal” emerged partially from the heavy psychedelic rock or acid rock scene, “acid rock” was often used interchangeably with “heavy metal” and “hard rock”. Musicologist Steve Waksman stated that “the distinction between acid rock, hard rock, and heavy metal can at some point never be more than tenuous”,[106] while percussionist John Beck defined “acid rock” as synonymous with hard rock and heavy metal.[107]

The variety, however, is staggering. There are some defined by songs, and others by the way other artists rushed to sound just like them. A few figures trace through multiple entries, showing up alone and in larger groups. Some remained steadfast in their musical convictions, playing with a remarkable consistency; others seemed to change directions as often as they switched venues on a cross-crossing world tour. Then there are those who appear like shooting stars, burning brightly but gone far too soon.

Although classic rock has mostly appealed to adult listeners, music associated with this format received more exposure with younger generations of listeners with the presence of the Internet and digital downloading. Some classic rock stations also play a limited number of current releases which are stylistically consistent with the station’s sound, or by heritage acts that are still active and producing new music.

Queen is no question the best band ever. They have the greatest singer ever, Freddie Mercury, also a amazing piano player. For example, Bohemian Rhapsody, Killer Queen, Seven Seas of Rhye, and The March of the Black Queen. One of the guitarists ever. For example, Bohemian Rhapsody, Killer Queen, The Prophet Song, Hammer To Fall. One of the best bassists. For example, Another One Bites The Dust, Killer Queen. Queen is my favorite band ever! As far as classic rock bands go Rush is very very very very very very good. I mean it is very impossible to play like them and their music is more than music I know this stuff because my dad learned off the internet how to get songs on your ipod playlist on your car radio so I hear a lot of old songs even though I am only turning 13 in a week and a half.

As we firmly move into the second half of 2017, the format ratings stories of the year are becoming clearer.  As we’ve seen in the past few years, an odd demographic pattern has been forming around both the Classic Hits and Classic Rock formats in PPM markets:

Is love suppose to be based on what you want in the relationship or what they want in the relationship? What about reciprocation? Released in 1977, this soft rock ballad shows a different side of Cooper that we have never seen before.

As a specialty show, Classic Alternative has been a good Sunday morning compliment for quite a few existing Alternative stations. In some markets, I wonder if a Classic Alternative WEEKEND show might also work in a Classic Rock, Classic Hits or even an AC format (if you stick to the bigger MTV hits)?

Journey is one of the most under rated bands. Neil Shone, Jonathan Cain & Steve Perry wrote some of Rock’s best known hit’s. Perry has been called “The Voice”. Neil Shone is as good a guitar player as any & Cain a master on keyboards. Journey is Rock & Roll!

With an ominous mood set from the first notes, we know for certain that “the storm is threatening” on the Rolling Stones’ haunting and powerful ‘Gimme Shelter.’ It’s ‘Apocalypse Now,’ in just over four minutes.

During their time Queen was one of the wildly famous rock bands, with their concerts selling millions around the world and their singles enjoying huge commercial success. Despite the astronomical success, Queen still strived to experiment with their sound especially during the early 1980s. Their charismatic founder and front man Freddie Mercury was struck by AIDS and eventually died from complications in 1991.

Guns N’ Roses began their career with a big bang. Their first single, “Welcome to the Jungle,” arrived on their debut album, Appetite for Destruction, and both kicked some serious tail. “Welcome to the Jungle,” a tune about the mean streets of Los Angeles, soon catapulted to #7 on the Billboard Hot 100, while Appetite for Destruction eventually sold 30 million copies, the eleventh best-selling album in the US. And, in 2009, VH1 picked “Welcome to the Jungle” as the number one hard rock song of all time.

Metal artists have had to defend their lyrics in front of the U.S. Senate and in court. In 1985, Twisted Sister frontman Dee Snider was asked to defend his song “Under the Blade” at a U.S. Senate hearing. At the hearing, the PMRC alleged that the song was about sadomasochism and rape; Snider stated that the song was about his bandmate’s throat surgery.[61] In 1986, Ozzy Osbourne was sued over the lyrics of his song “Suicide Solution”.[62] A lawsuit against Osbourne was filed by the parents of John McCollum, a depressed teenager who committed suicide allegedly after listening to Osbourne’s song. Osbourne was not found to be responsible for the teen’s death.[63] In 1990, Judas Priest was sued in American court by the parents of two young men who had shot themselves five years earlier, allegedly after hearing the subliminal statement “do it” in a Priest song. While the case attracted a great deal of media attention, it was ultimately dismissed.[58] In 1991, UK police seized death metal records from the British record label Earache Records, in an “unsuccessful attempt to prosecute the label for obscenity”.[64]

There are bands that don’t have a single other band to even come close to them. Led Zeppelin had some of the greatest guitar solos the world has ever seen. Jimmy Page re-defined the way people play the guitar. Robert Plant is the greatest screamer ever. He actually sounds good. John Paul Jones was the fastest bassist trying to keep up with Jimmy when he did a guitar solo. Not many people could do that. And then you’ve got the greatest drummer ever who sat behind a drum kit. His solo in Rock and Roll is one of the greatest I’ve ever heard. And that brings me o my final quote: LED ZEPPELIN RULE!

“Ideologically, ‘classic rock’ serves to confirm the dominant status of a particular period of music history – the emergence of rock in the mid-1960s – with its associated values and set of practices: live performance, self-expression, and authenticity; the group as the creative unit, with the charismatic lead singer playing a key role, and the guitar as the primary instrument. This was a version of classic Romanticism, an ideology with its origins in art and aesthetics.”

For many artists and bands, visual imagery plays a large role in heavy metal. In addition to its sound and lyrics, a heavy metal band’s image is expressed in album cover art, logos, stage sets, clothing, design of instruments, and music videos.[68]

This is another song with a true story behind it. The name Layla relates to a book entitled The Story of Layla and Majnun, which tells the tale of Majnun, who falls in love with a beautiful young woman; but her father rejects Majnun and he goes crazy with desire. In real life, guitarist Eric Clapton, the co-writer of “Layla,” fell in love with Patty Boyd, who had married George Harrison. Eventually, though, Boyd and Harrison got a divorce and Clapton then married Boyd. How sweet! Anyway, over the years “Layla” has garnered great popular and critical acclaim. Interestingly, Both Clapton and Duane Allman of the Allman Brothers wrote and played the famous guitar licks throughout the song.

Dubbed as an anthem for apathetic kids, “Smells Like Teen Spirit” is arguably Nirvana’s greatest hit and perhaps the greatest one of Grunge or alternative rock. It’s so popular, even now, that college marching bands sometimes play it. Moreover, the intro guitar lick, played with power chords, has become one of the most iconic riffs in rock and roll history. It seems every rock guitarist can play it to some degree. How about you? Anyway, the song blasted to #6 on Billboard’s Hot 100 in 1991 and 1992, shaking up the entire world of rock.

Thrash metal emerged in the early 1980s under the influence of hardcore punk and the new wave of British heavy metal,[202] particularly songs in the revved-up style known as speed metal. The movement began in the United States, with Bay Area thrash metal being the leading scene. The sound developed by thrash groups was faster and more aggressive than that of the original metal bands and their glam metal successors.[202] Low-register guitar riffs are typically overlaid with shredding leads. Lyrics often express nihilistic views or deal with social issues using visceral, gory language. Thrash has been described as a form of “urban blight music” and “a palefaced cousin of rap”.[203]

In a review of Sir Lord Baltimore’s Kingdom Come in the May 1971 Creem, Saunders wrote, “Sir Lord Baltimore seems to have down pat most all the best heavy metal tricks in the book”.[98] Creem critic Lester Bangs is credited with popularizing the term via his early 1970s essays on bands such as Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath.[99] Through the decade, heavy metal was used by certain critics as a virtually automatic putdown. In 1979, lead New York Times popular music critic John Rockwell described what he called “heavy-metal rock” as “brutally aggressive music played mostly for minds clouded by drugs”,[100] and, in a different article, as “a crude exaggeration of rock basics that appeals to white teenagers”.[101]

Earlier in the week, musicologist, radio pro, and mega-blogger Alan Cross posed today’s post title as a question in his highly entertaining blog, “A Journal of Musical Things.”  Quoting a story in the Vancouver Province by Stuart Derdeyn, the burning issue on the table is whether “Classic Alternative” is poised to be the next incarnation of Classic Rock.

The Beatles are THE best band in history. Rock and roll was slowly disappearing, but then The Beatles started. These guys just about saved rock and roll. If you like The Rolling Stones, then you’ve got to like The Beatles. I mean, The Beatles and The Stones were friends, and The Beatles gave The Stones their first single. Every song by The Beatles is excellent (even Revolution 9 and Everybody’s Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Monkey). The Beatles had enough songs to keep them rolling ’till TODAY. I mean, just imagine if Imagine, Live And Let Die, and My Sweet Lord were Beatles songs. These are some of the biggest songs in history, and they would have been Beatles songs had The Beatles not split up. It’s obvious: THE Beatles SHOULD HAVE BEEN #1 ON THIS LIST. THEY ARE THE BEST BAND IN HISTORY. PERIOD.

In relation to the gender composition of heavy metal bands, performers tended to be almost exclusively male[31] until at least the mid-1980s[32] apart from exceptions such as Girlschool.[31] However, “now [in the 2010s] maybe more than ever–strong metal women have put up their dukes and got down to it”,[33] “carv[ing] out a considerable place for [them]selves”.[34] A 2013 article[who?] states that metal “clearly empowers women”.[35] In the sub-genres of symphonic and power metal, there has been a sizable number of bands that have had women as the lead singers, bands such as Nightwish, Delain, and Within Temptation have featured women as lead singers with men playing instruments.

So what makes any rock music classic? Is it in the artist, the high amount of radio plays, the millions of records sold, or musical styles and subjects tackled in the lyrics? Actually, none of these things are required for music to be considered “classic rock.” “Classic rock” doesn’t mean the 70s rock records became automatically a classic by the time they were released. Nor an artist that releases these records doesn’t necessarily become a classic rock artist. A record’s huge sales don’t mean that record instantly becomes classic rock. The Beatles and Led Zeppelin have different musical styles and themes from each other, but both of them are nevertheless considered classic rock artists because they released classic rock albums.

The essence of metal drumming creating a loud, constant beat for the band using the “trifecta of speed, power, and precision”.[25] Metal drumming “requires an exceptional amount of endurance”, and drummers have to develop “considerable speed, coordination, and dexterity … to play the intricate patterns” used in metal.[26] A characteristic metal drumming technique is the cymbal choke, which consists of striking a cymbal and then immediately silencing it by grabbing it with the other hand (or, in some cases, the same striking hand), producing a burst of sound. The metal drum setup is generally much larger than those employed in other forms of rock music.[21] Black metal, death metal and some “mainstream metal” bands “all depend upon double-kicks and blast beats”.[27]

The Eagle’s song about the demise and decadence Hollywood show business went triple-platinum in the US alone, as well as selling well around the world. The success of the single helped its album Hotel California lift over 16 million copies. Needless to say, it has also become one of classic rock’s most memorable songs.

Acts to have appeared on the front cover three times or more to date include Queen, Guns N’ Roses, Black Sabbath / Ozzy Osbourne, Bon Jovi, Iron Maiden, Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin (Jimmy Page has been on the cover on his own right at least 4 times), Metallica, Thin Lizzy, Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, Genesis, AC/DC, and Mötley Crüe. More recent acts to have been on the cover include The Darkness and Velvet Revolver have been on it twice.

It is during the band’s golden era with Perry when the band enjoyed million-selling records — and that included seven consecutive multi-platinum albums such as their most famous Escape (1981) — sold-out concerts, and songs that have become the staple of classic rock. After Perry left the band, the group recruited Arnel Pineda and went on to score million-selling albums such as Revelation (2008) and Eclipse (2011). And it seems that Journey’s road to success isn’t letting up just yet.

Aerosmith is still my favorite classic rock band by far, their variety in musical tone in their songs is what stands out he most from “Dude Looks Like A Lady” to “I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing” just amazing music top to bottom!

When you combine classic blues, classic soul, and classic rock you get this song. Released in 1961, this love ballad truly defines what love is all about. Everything from the emotion, the experience, along with the trials and tribulations, at last the love has come.

In 1990, a review in Rolling Stone suggested retiring the term “heavy metal” as the genre was “ridiculously vague”.[201] The article stated that the term only fueled “misperceptions of rock & roll bigots who still assume that five bands as different as Ratt, Extreme, Anthrax, Danzig and Mother Love Bone” sound the same.[201]

Is love something that just happens or is it something we should look for? Released in 1969, this uptempo love song takes you to another place. Plus, it offers more than just one of the greatest guitar riffs ever, but a story that many can relate to.

Fred, my thought is that such a format would have the best success in a market that had a KROQ (L.A.) or 91X (S.D.) in the 80s. And it would need to be tweaked to encompass artists and songs that were big on the original station and downplay those that were bigger elsewhere.

Classic rock is a radio format which developed from the album-oriented rock (AOR) format in the early 1980s. In the United States, the classic rock format features music ranging generally from the mid-1960s to the late 1980s, primarily focusing on commercially successful hard rockpopularized in the 1970s. The radio format became increasingly popular with the baby boomer demographic by the end of the 1990s.

This band showed astounding talent in every aspect of music. Listen to any of their songs to listen to Robert Plant’s triple octive voice. Listen to Kashmir or Moby Dick to hear John Bonham’s drum skills or The Lemon Song to hear one of the greatest bass lines ever.

Should be #1. Not only Ozzy but also the Heaven and Hell days with Dio and even the Martin era wasn’t bad. Nobody has this longevity and still making great music. What other band here put out an album as recently as Devil You Know that is near that quality?

Former owner TeamRock bought Metal Hammer, Prog and Classic Rock from Future PLC in 2013.[3] On 19 December 2016, TeamRock called in the administrators with the loss of 73 jobs, after experiencing financial difficulties, and suspended publication of all three titles.[4] On 8 January 2017, Classic Rock, along with sister magazines Metal Hammer and Prog, were bought by previous owners Future Publishing for £800,000, and resumed publishing.[5]

What constitutes “Classic Rock”? As it turns out, the answer to that question has been shaped by careful data collection and even a few algorithms. Data-centric blog FiveThirtyEight put the numbers to the test and found that although New York stations seem to play more Led Zeppelin than their counterparts in KISS-loving Charlotte, North Carolina, the twenty-five most played classic rock artists nationwide – such as Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, and the Rolling Stones – make up half of the plays on classic rock stations. This explains how the same song seems to surface on classic rock radio again, and again, and again…

Over the years my taste in music has been redefined many times. It all came to a rest at Queen. The pure musicianship of every single member of this amazing band shows that they are the greatest band ever. Each member is credited for writing at least one #1 hit, even the bass and drummer. That is no surprise when you look at each one though. John Deacon has some of the most iconic bass lines ever. Roger Taylor with his intricate drum fills and an incredible voice which could have (and did) front a band of his own.

The Stones started in the business by doing covers of the American artists they admired. But eventually the Stones made their mark in the world through their own original songs such as “(I Can Get No) Satisfaction,” “Paint It Black,” “Get Off My Cloud,” and “Honky Tonk Women,” among others, which became huge chart hits. They have not only endured the changing trends of each decade, they have also integrated some of those trends and musical styles into their own music with so much success. Albums such as Out of Our Heads, Their Satanic Majesties Request, Exile on Main Street, Sticky Fingers, Through the Past Darkly, Some Girls and Tattoo You are just a handful from the Stones’ beloved vast body of work.

In the wake of the new wave of British heavy metal and Judas Priest’s breakthrough British Steel (1980), heavy metal became increasingly popular in the early 1980s. Many metal artists benefited from the exposure they received on MTV, which began airing in 1981—sales often soared if a band’s videos screened on the channel.[190] Def Leppard’s videos for Pyromania (1983) made them superstars in America and Quiet Riot became the first domestic heavy metal band to top the Billboard chart with Metal Health (1983). One of the seminal events in metal’s growing popularity was the 1983 US Festival in California, where the “heavy metal day” featuring Ozzy Osbourne, Van Halen, Scorpions, Mötley Crüe, Judas Priest, and others drew the largest audiences of the three-day event.[191]

Like many other rock bands, Aerosmith experienced a lull in their career due to the band member’s drug addiction problems. Heavy metal is traditionally characterized by loud distorted guitars, emphatic rhythms, dense bass-and-drum sound, and vigorous vocals. Metal subgenres variously emphasize, alter, or omit one or more of these attributes. New York Times critic Jon Pareles writes, “In the taxonomy of popular music, heavy metal is a major subspecies of hard-rock—the breed with less syncopation, less blues, more showmanship and more brute force.”[7] The typical band lineup includes a drummer, a bassist, a rhythm guitarist, a lead guitarist, and a singer, who may or may not be an instrumentalist. Keyboard instruments are sometimes used to enhance the fullness of the sound.[8] Deep Purple’s Jon Lord played an overdriven Hammond organ. In 1970, John Paul Jones used a Moog synthesizer on Led Zeppelin III; by the 1990s, in “almost every subgenre of heavy metal”[attribution needed] synthesizers were used.[9]

New single Jettisoned is due out in March, while in May they release the album Live At RAK Studios, available as limited-edition vinyl, CD and download. KOYO follow that with UK dates and summer festival appearances, after which they head to the US and Japan to tour in October. Oh, and they begin recording their second album as well.

While these bands may do well at state fairs and other summer festivals boasting well-stocked lineups of bands, their ability to support a format is questionable.  Classic Rock – and its derivatives – as well as Oldies stations were predicated on the power of nostalgia – not just for a few thousand fans in a market, but for tens of thousands or more of die-hard supporters.  We’re talking mass appeal vs. niche.

42 Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are an American rock band from Gainesville, Florida. By 1992, black metal scenes had begun to emerge in areas outside Scandinavia, including Germany, France, and Poland.[230] The 1993 murder of Mayhem’s Euronymous by Burzum’s Varg Vikernes provoked intensive media coverage.[227] Around 1996, when many in the scene felt the genre was stagnating,[231] several key bands, including Burzum and Finland’s Beherit, moved toward an ambient style, while symphonic black metal was explored by Sweden’s Tiamat and Switzerland’s Samael.[232] In the late 1990s and early 2000s decade, Norway’s Dimmu Borgir brought black metal closer to the mainstream,[233] as did Cradle of Filth.[234]

The origin of the term “heavy metal” in a musical context is uncertain. The phrase has been used for centuries in chemistry and metallurgy, where the periodic table organizes elements of both light and heavy metals (e.g., uranium). An early use of the term in modern popular culture was by countercultural writer William S. Burroughs. His 1962 novel The Soft Machine includes a character known as “Uranian Willy, the Heavy Metal Kid”. Burroughs’ next novel, Nova Express (1964), develops the theme, using heavy metal as a metaphor for addictive drugs: “With their diseases and orgasm drugs their sexless parasite life forms—Heavy Metal People of Uranus wrapped in cool blue mist of vaporized bank notes—And The Insect People of Minraud with metal music”.[89] Inspired by Burroughs’ novels,[90] the term was used in the title of the 1967 album Featuring the Human Host and the Heavy Metal Kids by Hapshash and the Coloured Coat, which has been claimed to be its first use in the context of music.[91] The phrase was later lifted by Sandy Pearlman, who used the term to describe The Byrds for their supposed “aluminium style of context and effect”, particularly on their album The Notorious Byrd Brothers (1968).[92]

“Black Sabbath’s audience was…left to scavenge for sounds with similar impact. By the mid-1970s, heavy metal aesthetic could be spotted, like a mythical beast, in the moody bass and complex dual guitars of Thin Lizzy, in the stagecraft of Alice Cooper, in the sizzling guitar and showy vocals of Queen, and in the thundering medieval questions of Rainbow…. Judas Priest arrived to unify and amplify these diverse highlights from hard rock’s sonic palette. For the first time, heavy metal became a true genre unto itself.”[176]

The words “somebody to love” make a popular song title, and this list includes the song recorded by the Jefferson Airplane. If there’s a song that’s redolent of the Haight/Ashbury subculture of the San Francisco Bay Area in 1967, it must be the Airplane’s “Somebody to Love.” The lead sang by Grace Slick, former sister-in-law of Darby Slick who wrote the lyrics, the tune has a driving, acid-rock tinged favor with a screaming guitar solo at the end. If there’s an anthem for the free-love movement, this may be it.

Jefferson who? It’s been decades since Jefferson Airplane/Starship front woman Grace Slick has recorded an album, and for good reason. The “White Rabbit” rocker has gone on record as saying she was in the biz well past her prime.

When critics say that they blew The Rolling Stones and The Who off stage you’d think people would stop being idiots and accept the genius of their music and Ronnie Van Zants Vocals however a few of these bands are not classic rock. The top ten best rock bands of all time:

“Johnny B. Goode” is a song about a country boy who makes it big by playing rock and roll; of course, that boy was Chuck Berry himself, whose guitar work on this twangy tune comprises rock guitar 101. Just about every guitarist in the business has studied Berry’s riffs in this quintessential rock classic. Incidentally, “Johnny B. Goode” hit #8 on the Billboard Hot 100, and Rolling Stone magazine named it #7 on its list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. Not bad for a song that has been called “the first rock star origin story.”

The era of metal’s mainstream dominance in North America came to an end in the early 1990s with the emergence of Nirvana and other grunge bands, signaling the popular breakthrough of alternative rock.[248] Grunge acts were influenced by the heavy metal sound, but rejected the excesses of the more popular metal bands, such as their “flashy and virtuosic solos” and “appearance-driven” MTV orientation.[198]

The Doors should definitely be higher on this list. Morrison gets all the hype, but Ray Manzarek is one of the greatest musicians to play rock and roll to this date. Just listen to there last song ever recorded (Riders on the Storm) and tell me they should still be #12.

The Silvertones are four piece Blues band that also does classic rock songs from the 60s, 70s, and 80s. They were founded in 1993 by Brian Wicker and Kyle Copeland. Their inaugural gig was at The Filling Station in Terrell , Texas. Like all bands, The Silvertones have had several line-up changes through the years. Although bands such as Sarcófago had been donning corpsepaint, by 1990, Mayhem was regularly wearing corpsepaint; many other black metal acts also adopted the look. Bathory inspired the Viking metal and folk metal movements and Immortal brought blast beats to the fore. Some bands in the Scandinavian black metal scene became associated with considerable violence in the early 1990s,[228] with Mayhem and Burzum linked to church burnings. Growing commercial hype around death metal generated a backlash; beginning in Norway, much of the Scandinavian metal underground shifted to support a black metal scene that resisted being co-opted by the commercial metal industry.[229]

Classic rock was borne out of a radio format that used to be named as “album oriented rock,” also known as AOR. While classic rock leans more on the whole album, “oldies” on the other hand is primarily geared towards singles that became successful on the music charts. You could say that “classic rock” is also a marketing ploy to help “immortalize” sales as well as glowing perceptive memories of rock music from the late 1960s to early 1980s.
